Bejeweled Blitz tops this week’s list of fastest-growing Facebook games by DAU

EA Popcap’s Bejeweled Blitz took the lead this week among the fastest-growing Facebook games by daily active user with a 10 percent gain of 300,000 DAU.

King.com’s Candy Crush Saga was close behind, also up by 300,000 DAU for a gain of 27 percent. Candy Crush Saga still has less than half the total DAU of Bejeweled Blitz. Disney Playdom’s Marvel: Avengers Alliance gained the No. 3 spot with 200,000 DAU for a 20 percent  increase, no doubt helped by this week’s impending launch of The Avengers movie.

Five other games on the list had gains over 50 percent. Cookapps’s bubble shooter Buggle brought in 160,000 DAU for a 76 percent gain. Picaboum’s French language trivia game Les Monsteurs surged by 43,000 DAU for a 614 percent bump. 6q.net’s Turkish language rummy-style card game Çanak Okey jumped by 34,000 DAU for a 567 percent gain. MindJolt’s Hidden Adventures was up by 20,000 DAU for a 100 percent gain. Finally, Con Artist Games’s The Last Stand: Dead Zone showed its first gain since late March, bringing in 20,000 DAU for a 67 percent increase.

Top 25 Facebook games of May 2012

Both lists for May’s top 25 Facebook games saw two big debuts: The recently-launched Candy Crush Saga is already tearing its way up the charts while Marvel: Avengers Alliance just managed to break in thanks to some impressive user gains.

We start with the list of top 25 games by daily active users, which is the best way to evaluate a title’s core audience. Twelve games were up from last month, with the largest gain going to King.com’s Candy Crush Saga with 1.3 million DAU. Disney Playdom’s Marvel: Avengers Alliance has been steadily climbing the charts and had the second-highest gain of the month with 620,000 DAU. Rovio’s Angry Birds had the third-highest gain with 400,000 DAU. King.com’s Bubble Witch Saga didn’t quite make it into the No. 3 spot like we thought it might, but it still managed to gain 100,000 DAU and move into the No. 4 position.

CityVille and Hidden Chronicles had the largest losses on the list; CityVille was down by 1.4 million DAU, while Hidden Chronicles dropped 1.2 million DAU.

Now it’s time to check out monthly active users, which measures a game’s overall reach on Facebook. CityVille continues to hold the No. 1 spot on the list, with slightly more than 4 million MAU over Texas HoldEm Poker in the No. 2 position. Zynga’s Hidden Chronicles had the largest drop this month, down by 4.7 million MAU, and subsequently dropped from the No. 3 spot to No. 5.

The largest gain belonged to Zynga Slingo with 4.3 million MAU, followed closely by Angry Birds with 4.1 million MAU. Bubble Witch Saga continues to grow, taking third place for gains this month with 2.9 million MAU. Although it debuted on our Top 25 list in the No. 25 spot, Disney Playdom’s Marvel: Avengers Alliance had the fourth-highest gain of the month with 2.1 million MAU.

All data in this post comes from our traffic tracking service, AppDataStay tuned next week for the beginning of May’s  Top 25 gainers and losers, when we look at the continued performance of games that appeared on the top 25 DAU list.

EA shutting down Restaurant City on Facebook, iOS

Restaurant City will be taken offline from both Facebook and the App Store on June 29, according to a Wall Photo added to the game’s album today. Players are being encouraged to move to The Sims Social both with a virtual currency bonus and the ability to convert existing Restaurant City premium currency to Sims Social premium currency.

Playfish’s Restaurant City was one of the top restaurant simulation games on Facebook in 2009; it maintained that momentum through 2010 after EA acquired the developer. The game recently marked its third birthday on Facebook in April — having shrunk by more than 90% in size from its peak numbers of 5.2 million daily active users and 18 million monthly active users to today’s 310,000 DAU and 1.8 million MAU, according to our AppData traffic tracking service. The real problem seemed to come for the game around September 2011 when retention (which we can measure by taking DAU as a percentage of MAU) dropped below 20 percent. Restaurant City rallied in October around the time its iOS version, Restaurant City: Gourmet Edition, received a major update — but retention dropped again in early 2012 and Gourmet Edition fell off the top apps lists.

As a genre, restaurant sims still show some growth on Facebook and mobile when they first launch. The games lack staying power, however — we still see Restaurant City as the second-largest game in the category on Facebook after Zynga’s Café World, which is also in decline.

As a company, EA is apparently struggling to maintain its position as a top developer in social and mobile. It’s slipped to the No. 4 position of top developers on Facebook by DAU and wooga is about to overtake it for the No. 2 position on MAU. On mobile, the developer pulled two titles from the App Store for poor performance in as many months this year. EA has also lost a lot of its staff to Zynga in the last 12 months and is now rumored to be facing layoffs, though the company has denied it. EA reports its Q1 2012 results next week.

Candy Crush Saga continues hot streak among this week’s fastest-growing Facebook games by MAU

King.com’s Candy Crush Saga is once again No. 1 on our list of fastest-growing Facebook games by monthly active users, gaining 2.2 million MAU for a 110 percent increase this week.

Rovio’s Angry Birds added 1 million MAU for a 4 percent gain, securing the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 is King.com’s Bubble Witch Saga with 1 million MAU for a five percent gain.

Disney Playdom had two titles place in the top five spots of this week’s list. Marvel: Avengers Alliance snagged the No. 4 spot with an 18 percent gain of 900,000 MAU, and Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers was up by 145 percent with 710,000 MAU. The developer’s newer title, Armies of Magic, also made a strong showing with 610,000 MAU for a 555 percent increase. The only other game with a greater-than-100 percent increase is Cookapps’ bubble shooter Buggle, which picked up 590,000 MAU for 328 percent growth.

The Hunger Games Adventures appears on our list this week for the first time, taking the No. 20 spot with its gain 290,000 MAU gain for a 43 percent increase. The Hunger Games Adventures steady growth since its March launch is undoubtedly helped by the phenomenal success of the movie; currently the game has 960,000 MAU and 150,000 daily active users. The movie’s box office power is (finally) beginning to wane, though, so it won’t be long before the game has to survive solely on its own merits.

Gunny shoots to the top of this week’s emerging games on Facebook

Vng Corp.’s Vietnamese language artillery shooter Gunny tops this weeks list of emerging games with a 500 percent gain of 50,000 monthly active users. Gunny’s in-game graphics and gameplay are identical to the DDTank games, which makes it seem to be a localized entry in the series. This is also the first time Gunny showed any significant traffic gains since November 2011.

In the No. 2 spot is Chinese language RPG 臥龍吟 官方繁體中文版 (“The Wolong Yin official Traditional Chinese”), which also gained 50,000 MAU for a 125 percent increase. MindJolt had six games on the list this week with gains greater than 50 percent. 40 Yard Dash was up by 30,000 MAU for a 60 percent gain. Bench Press gained 30,000 MAU for a 50 percent bump. King of Sweden increased by 30,000 MAU for a 100 percent gain. Dots II rose 50 percent with a 20,000 MAU gain. Clammit increased by 10,000 DAU for a 100 percent gain. Finally, Coconutz on the Beach was up by 50 percent with its 10,000 MAU increase.

Only one other game had a gain larger than 50 percent: Plinga’s Pioneers surged by 300 percent with a 15,000 MAU gain.

Bubble Witch Saga and CityVille this week’s gainer and loser among April’s Top 25 games

We’re in the final full week of April, which means it’s time to look at the highest-performing games on Top 25 Facebook Games in April. As was the case last week, these titles have huge numbers of daily active users; meaning traffic can change significantly without affecting a game’s position on the list.

Here’s what we’ve looked at so far this month:

  • April 5, 2012: No. 25 (Café World) through No. 19 (Pool Live Tour).
  • April 12, 2012: No. 18 (Slotomania – Slot Machines) through No. 13 (Happy Farm)
  • April 19, 2012: No. 12 (The Sims Social) through No. 7 (FarmVille)

This week, we take a look at No. 6 through No. 1.

6. Bubble Witch Saga

King.com’s Bubble Witch Saga is continuing its growth pattern. The game dipped a little to 5.7 million DAU at the beginning of the month before recovering and climbing up to 6.6 million. Bubble Witch Saga is the most popular of King.com’s “Saga” games showing strong, steady growth since it launched in October 2011. Provided the game can keep or surpass the 6.6 million DAU level, it looks like Bubble Witch Saga could climb up to the No. 3 spot of our Top 25 list in May.

5. CastleVille

Zynga’s CastleVille is still losing traffic, down from 6.3 million DAU to 5.7 million. The recent Martha Stewart promotion doesn’t seem to have helped the game retain old players or bring in new ones, either. CastleVille peaked with 8.4 million DAU in December 2011 — roughly a month after it launched — but its numbers have been gradually dropping off since then. CastleVille’s position on next month’s list may remain unchanged, though, now that Hidden Chronicles’s DAU numbers are at a lower point.

4. Hidden Chronicles

Zynga’s Hidden Chronicles is down from the beginning of the month, going from 6.3 million DAU to 5.5 million. The hidden object game peaked in February with 7.5 million DAU and spent the better part of two months hovering close to that number, even getting as high as 7.4 million DAU in late March. Since the March surge, though, the game’s begun to lose users. If Hidden Chronicles isn’t able to start gaining traffic again, it will drop a couple of spots on next month’s Top 25 list.

3. Texas HoldEm Poker

Zynga’s long-running Texas HoldEm Poker continues to enjoy some of its best numbers yet, up from 7 million DAU at the beginning of April to 7.2 million. The 2008 game has seen traffic has continued to grow over the past few years and looks like it might soon pass its March 2011 peak of 7.5 million DAU; Texas HoldEm Poker’s DAU managed to get as high as 7.4 million DAU this month before dropping back to its current level. The game is expected to move up to the No. 2 spot on next month’s list, between its growth and CityVille’s dwindling numbers.

2. CityVille

Zynga’s hit CityVille is down from 7.6 million DAU to 6.5 million, significantly less than the 2010 game’s peak of 21.5 million DAU in March 2011. CityVille’s numbers have been steadily falling since then, but the drop off seems to be picking up speed in recent months. The game still had 9 million DAU at the start of February. Next month, CityVille should still be in the top five games on our list, but it doesn’t seem likely that the game will ever hold the No. 1 position again.

1. Words With Friends

Words With Friends is still Zynga’s No. 1 game on Facebook. Although there were a couple of spikes in April’s traffic, the game seems to have settled at 7.6 million DAU  down a little from the 7.8 million DAU it had at the beginning of the month. Words With Friends managed to peak in early March with 9 million DAU, but it’s started to slowly lose users since that point. Barring a strong surge in Texas HoldEm Poker’s numbers over the next few days, Words With Friends will probably stay the No. 1 game in May, but only by a fraction.

All data in this post comes from our traffic tracking service, AppDataNext week, we’ll post the list of our Top 25 games for May and start looking at its entries the week afterwards.

Candy Crush Saga keeps sweet lead over this week’s fastest growing Facebook games by DAU

King.com’s Candy Crush Saga is continuing to leave other Facebook games in its confectionary dust, taking the top spot on this week’s list of fastest-growing Facebook games by daily active users thanks to a 53 percent gain of 380,000 DAU.

Electronic Arts had three games close behind Candy Crush Saga. Lucky Gem Casino took the No. 2 spot courtesy of its 320,000 DAU increase, a 320 percent gain. Lucky Gem Casino has been holding steady at around a million DAU for the past month but it’s seen a major traffic boost over the past few days, probably due to the new Monopoly-themed minigame that was added last week. Solitaire Blitz was up by 42 percent with a 260,000 DAU increase. Zuma Blitz jumped 48 percent with 240,000 DAU.

Disney Playdom’s Marvel: Avengers Alliance continues to benefit from the ongoing marketing campaign that surrounds the upcoming Avengers film, up by 100,000 DAU for a 5 percent gain. With five major hits (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America) leading up to this movie, polls are showing The Avengers as one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. With less than two weeks before the movie comes out, publicity for The Avengers is at an all-time high, and Marvel: Avengers Alliance is reaping the benefit.

The only other game on the list with a gain greater than 20 percent was 50 Cubes’s Fashion Designer, which gained 40,000 DAU for an increase of 40 percent.

Candy Crush Saga dominates this week’s list of fastest-growing Facebook games by MAU

King.com’s Candy Crush Saga brought in 1.04 million new monthly active users this week, a 108 percent gain that secured the No. 1 spot on our list of fastest-growing Facebook games by MAU.

King.com’s other “Saga” games also saw significant gains this week. Bubble Witch Saga was up by 400,000 MAU for a 2 percent gain, taking the No. 4 spot. Hoop De Loop Saga increased by 5 percent with 300,000 MAU, securing the No. 5 spot. Finally, Bubble Saga was up by 100,000 MAU for a 1 percent gain, putting the game in the No. 16 spot.

Disney Playdom’s Marvel: Avengers Alliance continues to bring in new players. This week the title gained 4 percent with a 200,000 MAU increase. The Avengers film is due for release in just under two weeks, which means the movie’s marketing campaign and licensing deals are reaching a fever pitch. Public awareness of the brand is incredibly high and it seems likely that Avengers Alliance will see gains like this for the next two to three weeks.

Only two other games had gain percentages in the double digits. Peak Games’ City of the Pyramids gained 200,000 MAU for a 10 percent increase. Telaxo’s Parking Mania increased by 11 percent, thanks to its 110,000 MAU increase this week.

Pencylvania draws on top of this week’s emerging Facebook games list

A clone of the pencil-balancing Flash game Pencylvania takes the top position on our list of emerging games by monthly active users, thanks to a 125 percent gain of 90,000 MAU.

Four other games show gains of 100 percent this this week. MindJolt’s Bench press is up by 30,000 MAU, as is Game Insight’s Lords of Atlantis. Guerillapps’s environmentally-themed management sim Trash Tycoon also sports a 30,000 MAU increase. Finally, the Chinese language strategy title《傲視天地》—無商城!絕對免費!華人第一戰爭策略網遊!as.kunlun.tw (“‘Disdain for the world’ - no mall! Absolutely free! The first Chinese war strategy online games!”) shows a 20,000 MAU gain.

This marks the second week in a row that ELEX’s DDTank 337-br appears on our list, thanks to a 20,000 MAU gain for a 50 percent increase. The game is a Portugese language entry into the DDTank series that’s starting to show activity after going dormant in October 2011.

MindJolt once again has multiple titles on this week’s chart. Aside from Bench Press, Carbon Auto Theft is still listed, but it’s down to No. 18 from No. 11 last week.

Correction: Several of the games on this list were miscategorized in AppData, and developer MindJolt should have been credited for the other following titles: Mower Move, Survive Tamota Prasus, 40 Yard Dash, Balenza, Ball Rain, Bowman and Bubble Spinner.

Zynga Slingo and The Sims Social this week’s gainer and loser among April’s Top 25 games

Now that the end of April is in sight, it’s time to start looking at the top half of the Top 25 Facebook Games in April. These games have much larger numbers of daily active users than lower-placed titles do; so while traffic may change significantly, a game’s position on the list may be unaffected for a while.

Here’s what we’ve looked at so far this month:

  • April 5, 2012: No. 25 (Café World) through No. 19 (Pool Live Tour).
  • April 12, 2012: No. 18 (Slotomania – Slot Machines) through No. 13 (Happy Farm)

This week, we take a look at No. 12 through No. 7.

T12. The Sims Social

EA’s The Sims Social continues to lose traffic, falling to 2.6 million DAU from its September 2011 peak of 11.25 million DAU. EA launched an expansion in late March that allowed players to provide their Sims with Careers, which temporarily brought the number of players in the game up to 3 million DAU, but interest waned over the past two weeks. At the beginning of March The Sims Social was tied for the No. 9 spot, but its declining traffic put it at a tie for No. 12 going into April. Assuming DAU continues to fall at this rate, the game will probably appear around No. 15 or No. 16 next month.

11. Bejeweled Blitz

EA PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz seems to be holding steady at approximately 3.2 million DAU.  The 2010 puzzle game is still performing well above its November 2011 low point of 2.5 million DAU, but it’s currently nowhere near October 2010′s 4.6 million DAU peak. It seems unlikely that Bejeweled Blitz’s position will change much (if at all) in the May Top 25.

10. Zynga Slingo

After a 600,000 DAU jump at the start of April, Zynga Slingo is holding steady around 4.2 million DAU. The game launched in February and has quickly climbed the charts, regularly appearing on recent lists of fastest-growing Facebook games by both DAU and monthly active user. The game seems to have hit a ceiling for now, and as it stands a 600,000 DAU gain may not be enough to move Zynga Slingo any further up the chart.

9. Diamond Dash

Diamond Dash is yet another wooga game with a long history of slow, constant DAU growth. Like wooga’s other games, Diamond Dash saw larger-than-normal traffic in March, leading to a high point of 4.7 million DAU. Going into April, however, DAU had dropped to 4.1 million and is only now beginning to pick up again. 4.6 million DAU secured Diamond Dash the No. 8 spot on our list in March so it may return to that position in May, but it seems unlikely that the game will climb any higher for next month’s Top 25.

8. Tetris Battle

Tetris Online’s Tetris Battle is down to 3.7 million DAU since returning to its peak of 4.2 million at the beginning of April, the highest point of traffic the classic puzzle game has seen since its July 2010 launch. The game’s been in a bit of a holding pattern since it first hit 4.2 million DAU in early March, occasionally returning to peak levels and then dropping off again. Tetris Battle’s will likely fall a couple of spots in May if its traffic continues this pattern and stays lower than that of both Zynga Slingo and Diamond Dash,

7. FarmVille

Zynga’s FarmVille continues to lose traffic, down to 4.9 million DAU from 5.1 million at the beginning of the month.FarmVille’s numbers have been steadily and noticeably dwindling since December 2010, when the game still had 16.5 million DAU. The increasingly-large gaps between titles at this point of the Top 25 list could mean FarmVille stays at No. 7 for another month, provided no other titles are able to climb past 4.7 million DAU.

All data in this post comes from our traffic tracking service, AppDataStay tuned for next week’s continuation of our Top 25 gainers and losers, when we look at No. 12 through No. 7 on the list.
