Take a Stroll Down Zombie Lane On This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

This week’s list of emerging Facebook games (defined by games that are still under 1 million monthly active users) is dominated by Digital Chocolate’s innovative Zombie Lane. This whimsical zombie-killing sim game just launched, and already has over 768,000 MAU. We noted last week that Zombie Lane is a fresh take that is polished and bug free. According to Appdata, our metrics service for tracking the top games on Facebook, Digital Chocolate are currently the 9th place Facebook game developer in terms of MAU with a total of 14 games.

NBA Legend comes in third place this week after a decent week of growth. NBA Legend has the advantage of being the officially branded NBA Facebook game. While it isn’t too innovative, that hasn’t stopped the game from growing to up to 929,000 MAU. If it continues gaining at this rate, NBA Legend will soon be over 1 million MAU as early as next week.

Trial Madness 2 is a lightweight arcade game by Social Point that was released in December. It follows the familiar Angry Birds style format of allowing players to advance through stages and levels, each ones getting progressively harder. The goal of Trial Madness is to get to the end of each level as fast as possible, with each level allowing replays to obtain the best score. The players maneuvers a motorized bike using the keyboard — jumping over obstacles, speeding up and braking, and trying not to wipe out. Socially, Trial Madness 2 does not have any new features that we haven’t seen yet. Players are prompted to share their successes and scores on their wall to brag, and tournaments allow people to compete for the highest score. Trial Madness 2 has been growing steadily in MAU, but its retention is very spotty and low.

Bubble Speed is a bubble popping arcade game that we’ve seen many times over in various incarnations. Players match colors of bubbles in an attempt to clear the board as quickly as possible before they run out of time. Scores are accumulated over time and placed on a weekly leaderboard to compare with online friends. Bubble Speed launched last November and was developed by GameDuell. It has fairly decent retention for a puzzle game, with 16% to 18% of its monthly active users logging in daily.

Older Games Resurge on This Week’s List of Top Growing Games by DAU

This week we have many older titles making an appearance on the leaderboard of fastest growing Facebook games based on daily active users. Some of these titles include FarmVille (which released its English Countryside feature giving players a second farm), Texas HoldEm Poker, Bejeweled Blitz, Zoo World, and FrontierVille. According to AppData, our analytics and metrics service for monitoring the top games on Facebook, DAU gains overall were slightly lower than usual — allowing some older games to resurface that we haven’t heard from in awhile.

CityVille takes the number one spot (due to Daily Horoscope being miscategorized as a game). Though Zynga’s city builder has fallen from its peak of 101 million monthly active users down to just under 90 million MAU, the game is still holding strong with over 20 million DAU. The only game that remotely comes close to this amount of daily traffic is FarmVille, with 13 million DAU. CityVille has over 25% of its monthly players logging in to play each day, and with that kind of engagement the game will continue to see strong revenue.

開心寶貝 (translated as Happy Baby) is a Chinese game that is too close to EA’s Pet Society for comfort. We first wrote about this clone in January of 2010 when the game first released and mentioned that it might as well be the Chinese localization of Pet Society. Happy Baby was released by Boyaa, a company that does not appear to have any relation whatsoever to EA or Playfish. The game has been on a steady decline for the past 6 months and a sudden spike in traffic in the last week seems to be from a cross-promotion or ad spend. At this point, it looks as if Happy Baby is a long way from its former peak and probably won’t see those numbers again.

Ubisoft’s CSI: Crime City is a game that has been on and off the leaderboards since it launched in October of last year. Crime City was developed by Area/Code (which was purchased by Zynga in January) and impressed us enough to make our top 10 games of 2010 list. Crime City peaked in January and has been on a downward spiral ever since, but is picking up steam again over the past week. With a big publisher like Ubisoft and an established television brand like CSI, Crime City could have what it takes to rebound. At this time, it is the best performing Ubisoft game four times over, with Castle & Co barely comparing.

This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by MAU Features Mafia and Monopoly

Mafia Wars is back on top yet again on this week’s list of fastest growing Facebook games by monthly active users. As mentioned previously, this is due in part to a large cross promotion with Zynga’s CityVille that put Mafia Wars front and center. This promotion has since ended at this time and Mafia Wars is seeing its regular rate of traffic again, meaning that next week it is unlikely we will see it taking the top spot on the leaderboards.

According to AppData, our metrics tracking service that analyzes the traffic of the top Facebook games, EA’s Monopoly Millionaires is still making some impressive gains. Over 1 million new players joined up with the game this month, keeping Monopoly Millionaires on a steep incline in MAU and daily active users. It still doesn’t appear to be slowing in terms of sheer growth, but Monopoly Millionaires could stand to bring its retention numbers up a bit to hold onto more players.

Zombie Lane is the new Digital Chocolate game that we reviewed last week. An innovative sim title, it brings in familiar elements from other successful games and adds a new twist on them to make a highly polished and fun experience. Zombie Lane is full of story, keeping players wanting to continue their adventure to see what might happen next. In a land full of recent clones, the title feels fresh. It manages to be light, engaging, and familiar to play even though it is unlike anything we’ve seen before on Facebook. Zombie Lane has robust collections, zombie combat complete with upgradeable weapons, an interesting story, and is growing quickly during the short week it has been available for play.

Happy Kingdom is a Happy Elements city building game set in the Middle Ages. As mentioned back in December, it is the English language version of the developer’s Chinese game My Kingdom, which currently has 1.1 million MAU and 387,000 DAU. Happy Kingdom uses a cutesy whimsical art style to appeal to gamers, and has a rather complex currency system that requires players to collect population, wood, stone, and food. The language translation leaves some accuracy to be desired at times, but overall it is a decently fun and polished game. It is quite a bit more simple than games like CityVille and Social City. Happy Kingdom gained over 170,000 players this week for a total of almost 483,000 MAU.

Wooga’s Diamond Dash Makes a Mad Dash on This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

This week’s list of emerging games on Facebook is headed up by Wooga’s new puzzle game, Diamond Dash. We reviewed this game last week and mentioned that it was a decent game but seemed to be far from complete. The easy-to-understand gameplay and the addictive nature of a Bejeweled Blitz-style countdown timer make for a nice implementation of a social version of Collapse. Diamond Dash picked up 532,000 monthly active users this week for a total of 610,000.

This list shows games that gained the most MAU and are still under 1 million monthly active users according to AppData, our service for tracking the top titles on Facebook.

The number two position goes to Lionside’s NBA Legend, the official Facebook game of the NBA, which grew by over 50% this week up to 735,000 MAU. Galaxy Online II, a strategy game by IGG is now nearing the 1 million MAU milestone as it too showed huge growth this week of 234,000 new players.

Big City Bingo is a bingo game launched last September by Product Madness. The bingo gameplay is passive — players sit and chat while numbers are being called off. The numbers are automatically marked on any bingo cards that the player has purchased with in-game coins while the players chat or play minigames. Winning earns players coins so that they can purchase more bingo cards, and winning is determined automatically. Coins can also be purchased with real currency. Big City Bingo is not a game about skill, it is entirely a social chat experience with a light game thrown on top. It has only recently started to gain traction with around 404,000 monthly players enjoying it.

Bar World by DNA Games is a Nightclub City-inspired game that allows players to run their own bar. We reviewed the game back in November when it first launched and noted that it was a very polished hodgepodge of many other successful games that have come before it. We felt that its avatar matchmaking feature was distinctive and should be played up more by the developer to show off its unique mechanics. Bar World peaked in December at 1.7 million MAU and slowly declined down to about 660,000 earlier this month. It is now back on track and has gained 61,000 new players in the last week, bringing it up to 841,000 MAU currently.

Mafia Wars Promotion Places It On Top Of This Week’s List of Top Growing Games by DAU

Excluding Daily Horoscope (which isn’t actually a game), Mafia Wars is back on top of the fastest growing Facebook games by daily active users this week. A heavy promotion for the game has placed a link to Mafia Wars along the bottom of CityVille, helping to spur massive new growth. The cross-promotion does appear to have come to an end, and Mafia Wars is heading back to its normal traffic numbers.

Monster Galaxy, the Gaia Online pet fighting game inspired by Pokemon, has been having some ups and downs this month according to AppData (our platform for monitoring and analyzing the top Facebook games). This week, Monster Galaxy has made up for the downs with a decent spike in player traffic — the game now has over 800,000 DAU and just under 8 million monthly active users.

Treasure Land is a treasure hunting game released by Kudos Media in November that has only started to take off. Kudos Media have been developing non-game applications such as Astrology, and this is their first Flash game attempt on Facebook. It is a surprisingly good first effort — though the gameplay is nearly identical to titles like Treasure Isle or Treasure Madness, Treasure Land is very polished and well-paced. Instead of focusing on exploring tropical islands, Treasure Land puts players within ancient tombs. It features a deeper story similar to FrontierVille, in that players have to complete objectives in order to uncover more pieces of puzzles or stories. Treasure Land itself is still rather small with only 170,000 MAU and 38,000 DAU, but it is a good enough game with all of the elements in the right place.

Diamond Dash is a brand new puzzle game by Wooga. Diamond Dash’s objective is to click on groups of consecutive like-colored puzzle pieces to remove them from the game board, similar to Collapse. Doing this quickly will give players a “Magic Fire” boost that adds a multiplier to their score. Players level up by completing games and can invite friends to join them in weekly tournaments. When we reviewed this game last week, we noted that Wooga have put a hard cap on progression by only allowing players to reach level 4. This was done in an attempt to garner early feedback about Diamond Dash to help guide the development of the game. Right now, Diamond Dash is a rather simple arcade game, but there are plans to add more levels next week and deeper game mechanics at an unknown point. Wooga have been doing well — this is their 6th game on Facebook and they are currently the 5th largest developer.

Mafia Wars, Slotomania on This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by MAU

This week’s list of fastest growing games on Facebook based on monthly active users is dominated by Mafia Wars. Zynga’s mature mobster title grew by 3.6 million players in the last week, which was more than double the second game on the list — Monopoly Millionaires. According to AppData, our metrics tool for analyzing the top games on Facebook, Mafia Wars had a suspicious random spike in traffic over the weekend which could be due to a cross-promotion or ad spend. At its peak, Mafia Wars reached 28 million MAU, but has been slowly losing players (as is natural for an older game) and is now played by 16 million MAU.

Monopoly Millionaires is still growing strong. Its daily and monthly active players charts are still growing steadily every day, however its DAU/MAU percentage is now settling to only 14-15%, substantially lower than highly engaging games such as CityVille.

Games is a game portal released in December of 2009 by Game Show Network. It features many simple colorful Flash games with leaderboards and a single currency to tie them all together. Most of the games are reskinned versions of other popular casual games, such as Bejeweled clones and hidden object games. It also contains officially branded titles such Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Games has a higher retention than many other Flash games portals, with over 20% of their monthly active players logging in each day to play.

Slotomania is a slot machine game developed by Playtika. Released in December 2010, this addicting little game has been steadily growing and has just passed the 1 million MAU mark. Slotomania is decently polished and allows players to level up and unlock prizes and new games. At the beginning players can only play Farm Fortune but as they play and earn levels they can unlock slot games like Magic Forest and Cat Chef.  There is also a game where players spin the slot reel and try to match up pictures of their friends’ faces.  Slotomania is a very engaging game with 28% to 30% DAU as a percentage of MAU, a benchmark that most casino-style games have failed to achieve.

This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games: Happy Treasure Hunters, Spot The Difference and More

Leading this week’s list of emerging Facebook games (defined by those games which are still under 1 million MAU) is the Chinese language title, 開心探寶 which translates to Happy Treasure Hunters. This sim/adventure game is heavily inspired by Zynga’s Treasure Isle, and doesn’t appear to iterate too much on the proven mechanics of the game. We were unable to find the name of the developer, however they launched the game in mid-January. According to AppData, our platform for analyzing the top growing Facebook games, Happy Treasure Hunters has gained 761,000 players in just the last week alone.

In the second position this week is Spot The Difference, an older game that launched in 2008 by Lunatic Games. This simplistic game that challenges players to seek out all differences between two pictures was profiled in last week’s emerging games leaderboard. Spot The Difference grew by another 306,000 players over the past seven days and is now sitting at over 778,000 monthly active users.

NBA Legend is the official NBA Facebook game developed by Lionside, Inc. and launched last month. It grew by 130% in the past week, bringing it to just under 450,000 MAU. On first impression, NBA Legend well-polished and fairly easy to understand, however after spending some time with the game it feels little less a basketball game and more like a forced experience attempting to take advantage of working mechanics in other Facebook games. Your home court is simply the place where you “drill”, which means clicking on yourself and choosing a length of time to drill for (similar to a contract in a game like Social City). Drilling with your neighbors is how you build up chemistry with your teammates, however going to visit them feels like at attempt to make a neighbor system work in a game that isn’t really suited for it. Actual basketball games are as simple as switching out team members and clicking “play”, then watching as the match is simulated and a score is randomly given to you. Despite not that much of an interactive sports games, NBA Legend has been showing some early growth.

Dragon Age Legends is the companion game to Electronic Arts’ new console and PC RPG Dragon Age II. The game was in closed beta and only available to those who had purchased the retail version of Dragon Age II until recently, but it is now available for anyone on Facebook to play. Touted as a “Facebook game for people who hate Facebook games”, Dragon Age Legends is a light RPG with tie-ins to the console and PC version of Dragon Age II. Players use energy to compete in battles with creatures and enemies and are rewarded with in-game items for Dragon Age II. Dragon Age Legends has nearly doubled its playerbase in the past week and now has 204,000 MAU.

CityVille Engagement Still Growing on This Week’s List of Top Growing Apps by DAU

Although its monthly active user count has been falling, Zynga has managed to keep up a strong rate of daily active user growth for its latest hit on Facebook, city-builder CityVille. DAU indicates highly engaged users who are willing to pay for virtual goods, so we can assume that Zynga is doing quite well for itself financially — and will continue to do so for quite awhile to come, given the DAU trajectory.

We take these numbers from AppData, our data tracking service providing performance metrics on applications and developers on Facebook.

Here’s what CityVille’s past month has looked like:

Looking down the list, one can see that a wide range of apps in other languages are seeing new growth. 開心探寶, or Happy Treasure Hunters, comes from two individuals. The game oddly has been around for months with hardly any users, then saw its MAU and DAU counts shoot up from nearly nothing in the last few days — apparently a new marketing effort.

Turkish card game app Mynet Çanak Okey also continues to climb in both MAU and DAU counts, apparently meeting a desire for a Turkish-language experience despite the many card game competitors out there. It grew by nearly 50% to reach around 750,000 DAU. Similarly, Boyaa’s 德州撲克(中文版) — “Texas Hold’em (Chinese Version)” — grew by more than 20% to around 500,000 daily actives.

It’s not just local developers reaching local audiences though. International developer The Broth appears to have gone in and nailed the Turkish demand for farming apps, as its Komşu Çiftlik or “Neighboring Farm” which has been showing high retention around steady growth lately. Zynga’s Chinese-language version of FarmVille, FarmVille 中文版,  also seems to be coming along reasonably well.

Monopoly Millionaires Continues to Lead on This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by MAU

Monopoly Millionaires is still going strong in the number one position in this week’s list of fastest-growing Facebook games based on monthly active users. EA’s familiar title gained a large amount of new players over the last week: almost 1.2 million according to AppData (our platform for analyzing the top Facebook games). In just a month and a half, Monopoly Millionaires has shot up to just under 3 million MAU and is still growing at a rapid pace.

Popcap’s Zuma Blitz is also growing steadily after a few weeks of decline. We took a closer peek at this casual game in last week’s leaderboard, and it has now gained another 820,000 MAU to bring it to a total of 5.7 million MAU. Finally, Ravenwood Fair is still on the rise although its pace has slowed significantly.

Komşu Çiftlik (a Turkish language game that translates to Neighboring Farm) has spent some time on our radar. The game developed by TheBroth is a farming game that feels similar to titles like Country Story and FarmVille. It is a highly polished farm sim with a heavy emphasis on collecting animals and harvesting crops. Released in December, Komşu Çiftlik has 2.8 million MAU and seems to be growing steadily enough to surpass 3 million MAU in the coming weeks.

Super Billares is a Social Point developed billiards game in the Spanish language. It is one of the first pool playing games that has gained momentum, with 755,000 monthly players. Most of its traffic appears to be from marketing at this point after a sudden spike last week and very low retention percentage (Super Billares is only retaining 5-10% of their monthly players each day). Non-English games appear to have a lower barrier of entry for developers as there are successful English language games that have still not been localized for other countries. Super Billares plays more like a casual arcade game that you would find on a gaming portal such as Yahoo Games or Pogo.

Galaxy Online II Leads This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

This week’s list of the top emerging Facebook games (as identified by those games still under 1 million monthly active users) contains some familiar titles as well as a slew of new games that we haven’t seen before. According to AppData — our analytics service for measuring the traffic in the top Facebook games — Galaxy Online II has had the strongest growth over the past week. The sci-fi strategy game by IGG grew by 500% this week, and now has over a half million MAU.

Another familiar title is Pirates Saga, the treasure seeking game with traditional MMORPG elements that we reviewed back in December. While Pirates Saga has seen some fluctuation in its daily active users, its MAU has been climbing steadily since the end of February. Another game that is growing fast is DDTank. We took a closer look at this Worms-inspired game earlier in the week and felt that it was overwhelmingly full of features that made it seem bloated and shallow.

Twilight Wars is an action game launched at the end of February that pits players up against randomly matched teammates in an “every man for himself” battle. Players are matched according to skill level and can pick up weapons on the ground within the stage. Twilight Wars — developed by Gamelet — has a very retro gaming feel with pixel art characters and environment and a top-down view. Players shoot or slash each other with weapons and are scored based on the amount of kills and deaths they have within the match. Rankings and leaderboards allow players to compare their score with their friends, or with everyone who plays the game. Everything about Twilight Wars feels very simplistic and is lacking polish, however there is a element game below that could be viable with core gamers if synchronous gameplay ends up gaining legitimacy on Facebook. Twilight Wars currently has almost 250,000 monthly players.

Spot the Difference is exactly what it sounds like, a game in which the objective is to find all of the differences between two pictures. This Lunatic Games title is a simple single player title that is lacking in social features aside from a rudimentary leaderboard. Players have a set amount of time to find all of the differences before their time runs out, and incorrect clicks result in the time depleting faster. Free clues are given out sparingly as they are driving the game’s monetization (in addition to banner advertising). This genre of game is popular in the casual games market, but at this point it doesn’t feel as if Spot the Difference has brought an innovative and social experience to Facebook. The game launched in October of 2008 and only had a recent resurgence over the past week.  At its peak, Spot the Difference reached 683,000 MAU.
