Zynga Games Command One Quarter Of This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by DAU

This week’s list of fastest-growing games on Facebook based on daily active users features five of Zynga’s games. Leading the pack is CityVille, which saw a gain of 1.1 million players this week. CityVille has been holding steady in terms of traffic and retention for the last few weeks, and is still the top Facebook application overall according to AppData (our metrics platform for analyzing the top games and applications on Facebook). Aside from a dip in traffic and retention on April 24 and 25, CityVille has been maintaining a 21-22% DAU/MAU percentage.

Other Zynga titles present this week include FarmVille, Treasure Isle, FrontierVille, and Texas HoldEm Poker. Zynga’s cross-game customer loyalty program, RewardVille, could be contributing to the growth of some of these older games.

Auto Hustle is a Metrogames title that launched last October but has only recently begun to take off. This game is best explained as Grand Theft Auto meets Mafia Wars. Players collect weapons and power-ups to fight people on the street, steal cars, and blow up police vehicles. Jobs are given Mafia Wars-style that require energy to be completed and provide objectives to complete while wandering the town. When we reviewed this game, we noticed a very clunky control scheme that made Auto Hustle frustrating to play. Unfortunately, the game is still plagued by bugs that detract from what could be a very solid game. Nonetheless, Auto Hustle began growing on April 24 following its official launch.

Foreign Language Games Filling Slots on This Week’s List of Fastest Growing Facebook Games by DAU

It should be no surprise that Gardens of Time is the fastest growing game this week in terms of daily active users. This Playdom game has been growing quickly but appears to be starting to level off. According to AppData, our platform for monitoring the growth metrics of the top games on Facebook, Gardens of Time has actually lost DAU for the past few days. There is definitely a higher ceiling than 900,000 DAU for hidden object games, so we might still see more growth for the game.

There are six games in the leaderboard this week that are not in the English language. This includes 開心水族箱 (My Fishbowl), แฮปปี้เกาะ (Happy Aquarium, but not the Crowdstar title), แฮปปี้คนเลี้ยงหม (Love & Pork), 開心農場 (Happy Farm), Perro Saltarín (Jumping Dog), and Revienta el teclado (Keyboard Bursts). Many of these are basic sim games that are much shallower in terms of features compared to English language games in the same genre. However, it is going to show that Facebook games are not just a North American phenomenon, that they truly have potential to spread just as far as Facebook itself has grown.

Hidden Object Games Appear at the Top on This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by MAU

This week’s list of fastest growing Facebook games based on monthly active users is lead by Playdom’s new game Gardens of Time. We reviewed this hidden object game earlier this month and thought that the road to fast growth might be particularly difficult for the game, given the lack of success of other hidden object games on Facebook. So far, Gardens of Time is showing impressive early numbers that have already proven it to be the most successful Facebook game of its genre to date. In just a couple of short weeks, Gardens of Time has gained 2.2 million MAU and does not seem to be slowing any time soon — although it’s not clear if the growth is mainly due to ads, or other more organic factors.

Another newcomer to this week’s list is yet another hidden object game, Game Insight’s Mystery Manor. According to AppData, our metrics service for monitoring the top games on Facebook, Mystery Manor grew 27% over the last week and now has 1.3 million MAU. We took a closer look at both Gardens of Time and Mystery Manor last week and compared the two games.

A brand new game to the leaderboard this week is UFC Undisputed Fight Nation, the officially branded MMA game developed by THQ. This game feels very similar to other branded Mafia Wars-style clones, such as the official Jersey Shore game (also on this week’s list). In UFC Undisputed Fight Nation, players spend energy to train up various fighting skills that are used in ‘battle’ with other players. Leveling up in the game allows players to allocate statistics to give themselves more energy, stamina, or strength. Win/loss records are prominently displayed and players are encouraged to add friends to the game to give them additional sparring power. Though heavily polished, the game seems to be lacking in depth and originality. Whether the UFC branding will be enough to keep this game on an upward trend remains to be seen at this point.

Playdom Commands This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by DAU With Gardens of Time

This week’s list of fastest growing games on Facebook based on daily active users features Playdom front and center in the number one position. The new hidden object game Gardens of Time has been showing a fascinating amount of growth. Launched on April 7th, Gardens of Time has gained almost 600,000 DAU in under two short weeks. This highly polished and fun game is on its way to surpass Playdom’s most popular game Wild Ones in daily activity within a day or two.

According to AppData, our metrics platform for tracking new Facebook games like this, the game is currently seeing 50% of its monthly active users logging in each day to play. Of course, this number is likely to go down quite far, as is usual for newly launched applications — but still, it’s an early indicator that Playdom has a game with good potential. For sake of comparison, Playdom’s other new game, Deep Realms, sank to under 17% DAU/MAU after two weeks.

Zombie Lane, the newest Digital Chocolate title, has still been going strong and climbing up the charts. Having launched in late March, this zombie-slaughtering sim game has been on a direct path to popularity ever since. Though there is nothing overly original about Zombie Lane aside from a fresh theme, there is something that just feels right while playing it. Everything is in its place — well planned out quests, fun objectives, an enticing game loop, and cheerful and polished graphics and gameplay. It’s no surprise that Zombie Lane has over 516,000 DAU and 2.2 million MAU in less than a month. It’s a well done game and is now Digital Chocolate’s second most popular game after Millionaire City. Zombie Lane shows that developers don’t have to take too many risks; there is still a place for a well-designed game that sticks to the tried and true but delivers a high quality experience.

Diamond Dash Still Leading This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by MAU

This week’s leaderboard of the fastest growing games on Facebook based on monthly active users is dominated by Wooga’s Diamond Dash. Though the game hasn’t added any new content since it exploded in popularity last month, there is something special about matching colorful gems while increasingly ominous music plays that really makes players enjoy these games. Diamond Dash borrows quite heavily from the puzzle game titan Bejeweled Blitz, with voiceovers and sound effects that are nearly indistinguishable between the two. The result, whatever the causes, is that it’s been growing at a rapid pace (over twice as fast as any other game this week).

Another game that is making its way up the chart is Zombie Lane, the latest Digital Chocolate game. This charming and high quality social game makes zombies something for fun and entertainment rather than something to be afraid of. Zombie Lane just launched last month and already has almost 2 million MAU according to AppData, our metrics platform for monitoring the traffic in the top growing Facebook games.

Gourmet Ranch is a farming and cooking simulation game that was developed and released by Playdemic last summer (who were acquired by RockYou in January). While still a rather simple game, Gourmet Ranch brings in more elements of both growing crops and using them in production to make food. For some time, farming games were popping up left and right and players seemed to be feeling some “farming fatigue”. As a whole, there is nothing wrong with Gourmet Ranch, but it does feel as if the genre is quite stale. Players seem to be agreeing, as its monthly retention hovers around 10-13%. RockYou have stated that their prime focus is on making social games rather than lightweight applications, so we’re hoping that their future efforts will feel fresh and innovative.

Bubble Island is another Wooga game that we’ve been hearing a lot more about lately. This new twist on a classic bubble popping arcade game launched in January of 2010. When we reviewed it, we felt that it was quite the entertaining rendition of a familiar favorite. When it first released, Bubble Island consisted of a series of game levels laid out in a progression-based adventure format with increasingly difficult puzzle games standing in the way of getting to the next level. Since then, a “blitz” style mode has been added that simply allows players to play for 60 seconds and compete for a place amongst their friends on a leaderboard. Both Bubble Island and Diamond Dash have the same bright and cheerful art style and high level of polish, which leads to a great experience for players who enjoy both.

RPGs Battle It Out On This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

This week’s list of emerging games — those still under 1 million monthly active users — is filled with new titles that we haven’t explored yet. Leading the pack this week is TrainCity, a game we’ve talked about quite a bit on Inside Social Games. We reviewed this LIFO Interactive city builder in January, and noted that it looked great and was well-designed but might not end up being a successful game due to the city theme being a crowded space. According to AppData, (our metrics platform for tracking the top Facebook games) TrainCity has grown by 66% this week up to just under 800,000 MAU. It’s possible that TrainCity will end up doing well despite its genre being one of stiff competition.

It has been quite some time since we’ve been able to talk about a Playdom game on our weekly leaderboards, but this week Deep Realms is giving us the opportunity. We took a close look at this classic RPG-meets-Facebook last month when it first launched. We felt that it was a very interesting foray into the world of RPG style games that are so popular on other platforms, but that an addition of more story elements would take the game to a new level. Deep Realms’ early metrics look interesting — though it is on a steady incline in terms of MAU, its daily active users are fluctuating more than what is usual for new games. It has also already fallen down to under 14% DAU as a percentage of MAU, which is a good early indication that its retention is lacking. This could be because Playdom are using a lot of internal cross-promotion efforts and the demographic of most of their other games is not congruent with the more core gameplay of Deep Realms. It will be interesting to watch this game as it attempts to bring fresh innovation to Facebook.

Monster Hero is a pet-battling RPG that works as a nice comparison to Deep Realms. In this equally-as-stylized core game for a more mixed gender audience, the battles are determined by an Angry Birds-style minigame as opposed to the turn-based combat in Deep Realms. Monster Hero launched in February, just a month before Playdom’s RPG and is growing at around 50% of the pace (but retaining players slightly better). Of course, new developer Phoenix Age is lacking in the existing userbase to utilize for early traffic, and it’s also lacking Playdom’s budget. Yet Monster Hero is an equally appealing game, with a cute art style, some interesting minigame mechanics, and a similar content-heavy map requirement.

Major Titles Show Major Gains On This Weeks List of Fastest Growing Facebook Games by DAU

This week’s list of fastest growing Facebook games by daily active users is utterly dominated by Wooga’s Diamond Dash. We’ve been talking about this game for several weeks now as it started a mad rush up the charts in late March and hasn’t looked back since. This colorful match 3 gem game has an above average monthly retention percentage of 24%. Along with Wooga’s other games Monster World, Bubble Island, and Happy Hospital, Diamond Dash has helped move Wooga into the fourth position on the Facebook game developer leaderboard. According to AppData (our metrics service for analyzing the trends and performance of the top games and developers on Facebook), Social Point is now in fifth place with Playdom falling to sixth.

Also showing a large increase in traffic this week is Kabam’s strategy game, Dragons of Atlantis. This core game seems to be struggling a bit to hold on to its DAU and continue growing — after a large dip in activity earlier this month it has pushed its way back to just above its previous all-time highs but now appears to be plateauing. Dragons of Atlantis’ DAU as a percentage of monthly active users is only around 13%; a number that is quite a bit lower than the top games on Facebook right now.

Also, many other large developer have titles that are making appearances on this week’s list. Zynga’s CityVille is still showing growth and great engagement at 19.7 million DAU, while the Chinese version of FarmVille grew to 433,000 DAU this week and Texas Hold’Em Poker has crested over 7 million DAU. Other large and familiar favorites this week include PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz and EA’s Monopoly Millionaires.

Tetris Battle is the official multiplayer Tetris game developed by Tetris Online. This interesting rendition of Tetris follows a typical “versus” style gameplay, in which the player is paired up with random strangers (or their Facebook friends) and attempts to beat them at a game of Tetris. Players earn higher ranks, Tetris Cash, and additional perks for winning battles against people. Though the game is rather fun and polished, it seems to lack real motivation to spend money. At this time, Tetris Cash is used to buy alternative styling for the game pieces themselves or to refill energy (which is used to initiate games). Tetris Battle launched in July of last year and is currently at its all time high DAU of 502,000.

Puzzle, Sim, and Casino Games Lead This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

This week’s list of emerging Facebook games — which we define as those that grew the most to end the week at less than 1 million monthly active users — is a mishmash of different types of titles. On the list we have sim games such as Flutter, Happy Kingdom, and Treasure Land, puzzle games like Miner Speed and Temple of Mahjong, and casino games like WPT Texas Hold ‘Em Poker and CROWDPARK.

According to AppData, our metrics service for analyzing the growth in the top Facebook games, the largest percentage growth game from Flutter and Boss Vegas, which grew by 600% and 400% respectively. We will be watching these games closely over the next few weeks to see if they continue to grow or if they are peaking this week.

Boss Vegas is a game that launched in February. We reviewed this casino game shortly after it launched, deciding that it was a nicely polished game with some interesting mechanics that lacked in innovative social features and difficulty. Until the end of March, Boss Vegas was hovering at a very steady 15,000 MAU before taking off in the last week. Judging by the falling retention percentages, it would appear this was the sudden introduction of a cross promotion or marketing spend. Boss Vegas was developed by Happy Elements, who also have the titles My Fishbowl and Happy Kingdom.

Punch Punch Revolution is an interesting game by Alii, Inc that launched last May to little fanfare. It’s touted as a motion control game, using your webcam to detect your hands and your movement. Of course, it is a fighting game allowing you to battle enemies to level up and unlock new areas. It feels like a Flash title found on a games portal and very little like a Facebook app. In addition, the webcam feature doesn’t actually seem to function — on several computers it failed to detect a webcam. Punch Punch Revolution also does not contain many viral features, but may be gaining traffic through the Applifier network that it is a part of. There isn’t much to be impressed about at this point, but Punch Punch Revolution does inspire some interesting thoughts about the future technology and integration of Facebook games.

Trains, Butterflies, and Diamonds on This Weeks List of Fastest Growing Facebook Games by DAU

This week’s top 20 Facebook games by daily active users is a good mix of brand new titles and some older games on the rise. Leading the pack is Wooga’s Diamond Dash, which also led the charts this week in terms of monthly active user growth. According to AppData, our service for analyzing the growth of the top Facebook games, the game grew its DAU by 84% this week and does not appear to be slowing its pace any time soon.

Other older familiar titles on this week’s list include Monster Galaxy (Gaia’s Pokemon-inspired pet battling game), Ninja Saga, Jersey Shore, and Car Town. These games all made rather small increases percentage-wise, but were substantial enough to beat out many of the newer titles. Crowdstar’s It Girl was a top game of 2010 that has been declining as of late, but still has been holding on to its status as a top 20 game for both DAU and MAU.

Flutter, developed by Runaway Games, is not a new game. We covered the title when it launched last August, and thought it was an interesting foray into virtual space decoration and education. In Flutter, the player navigates a lush rainforest as a butterfly, learning about the ecosystem and the natural life that calls the rainforest home. Players have their own home ‘grove’ to decorate any way they like, and there is a small world to explore that gives XP and resources needed to access more of the game. It’s a rather simplistic game with an artistic aesthetic that is pleasing and relaxing to play. When first launched, Flutter failed to make any sort of impression whatsoever. The game has just now getting lift-off after being available for play for 8 months, and has gained over 45,000 DAU in the past week.

Train City by LIFO Interactive launched in December of last year. When we reviewed it, we thought it was a well-polished addition to the growing collection of train games on Facebook. Train City contains all of the pieces of the puzzle to making a decent Facebook game: a whimsical art style, easy to learn gameplay, and a compelling game loop that is familiar. Many game elements were borrowed from other games such as contracts (conductors in Train City), tax collection, and population growth. All in all, Train City feels like a very solid game that is on the rise after hovering around 200,000 MAU for several months.

Wooga Leads This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Facebook Games by MAU With Diamond Dash

The top game on this week’s leaderboard of fastest growing Facebook games by monthly active users is Wooga’s Diamond Dash. This brightly colored puzzle game requires players to pop like-colored bubbles to clear them from the game board, all the while competing with friends for top weekly scores. Players have a finite number of lives (or plays) that can be used, and can earn new lives by waiting for them to replenish automatically or asking for them from friends.

According to AppData, our metrics service for monitoring the top games on Facebook, Diamond Dash has not only been on a steady incline, it also boasts a strong retention number of over 27%. This number is slightly higher than CityVille and other top games. We will be watching Diamond Dash closely as it fights to hold its number one position on the weekly charts.

Other familiar games on this week’s list include FarmVille, Monster Galaxy, Bejeweled Blitz, and Monopoly Millionaires. Many of these games appear to be trading off positions on the leaderboard with each week that passes.

Zoo World is RockYou’s signature social game, the title that made the company shift from lightweight applications and move onto larger scale social game products. At its height last year, Zoo World reached a peak of over 20 million MAU and almost 3 million daily active users. At that time, it was a leading Facebook game sitting alongside titles by Playdom, Zynga, Playfish, and Crowdstar. Today, Zoo World is climbing back up the charts. While 7 million MAU is nothing to sneeze at, Zoo World is still a long way from its glory days. The game originally grew because of an extensive animal collection and breeding mechanic that made its players want to collect-them-all (a version of it also appeared in top non-game RockYou apps, which also helped). Today, other games such as Monster Galaxy are using pet collection as motivation to play, and Zoo World feels like an older title with fewer bells and whistles. Nonetheless, for a game that launched in 2009, Zoo World has done an impressive job of holding on to its core players.

Monster Galaxy is Gaia Online’s first venture into social games on Facebook. It has everything that a good Pokemon-inspired game should have, including pet collections, combat, leveling up, and of course, finding that elusive secret pet that requires unlocking many before it. Monster Galaxy has many social features, allowing players to help each other find and collect pets (called Mogas) and provide seeds which allow them to be captured. It’s a highly polished game with a unique art style that sets it apart from many other games.
