Riddle Stone Saga brings Picross-style number puzzles to Facebook

Ooblada’s Riddle Stone Saga offers brain teasers on Facebook, as players are challenged with creating images by filling in the appropriate squares on a grid. The game is similar to Picross, as players must look at the numbers associated with each column or row on the grid to know how many squares to fill in, and how many to avoid.

Puzzles come in different sizes and complexities, but there will typically be a handful of rows or columns that give you a starting point. For instance, in a puzzle that is five squares wide, one row might have a ‘5’ next to it. This tells the player that all five squares in that row are to be filled in, and they can continue from there.

Things become more difficult with the inclusion of multiple numbers corresponding to a single row or column. There must be at least one empty square between two “runs” of colored squares, and the game offers an “X” tool for players to mark squares that they’ve determined must never be colored.

If players fill an incorrect square, they’ll lose health points. These can be regained by continuing on, as other squares will offer health boosts to help players out. Eventually, as puzzles become larger and more complex, it’s possible to run out of health altogether, which fails the level and consumes a life. Like other level-based games on Facebook, these lives regenerate automatically over time, or can be purchased with real-money.

Players earn stars on each stage depending on how long it takes them to complete the level, and leaderboards give players the opportunity to compare their scores against friends. Players can also send free lives to their friends to help them keep going.

Riddle Stone Saga currently has over 176,000 monthly active players, according to our app tracking service AppData. The game is now available to play for free on Facebook.
