After a successful initial release of The Smurfs & Co. on Facebook in 2011, the game slowly lost players and was finally shuttered in favor of a new and improved experience: a second Smurfs simulation game.

Ubisoft’s The Smurfs & Co: Spellbound is a sequel of sorts to the original game, which launched on Facebook in July. The game is already heating up the Facebook app charts, gaining almost 1 million players in the last seven days alone, according to our app tracking service AppData.

The Smurfs & Co: Spellbound takes players back into the world of those adorable blue Smurfs, which has been destroyed after Gargamel’s latest potion literally blew up in his face. The blast cloud turned all of the Smurfs to stone, so it’s up to players to free the Smurfs and return Smurf Village to its former glory.

The Smurfs & Co: Spellbound is quest based, with an energy system that limits the length of gameplay sessions. Players collect resources including twigs, vines and stones, and can combine those with other resources in Handy’s Workshop to craft new things.

As players gather resources, they’re encouraged to spend some to unlock new land expansions and buildings for the village. The more items players build and unlock, the happier the Smurfs become, and the more are freed from their stone prisons.

As a thank you to previous fans, Ubisoft is offering 100 Gems to players of The Smurfs & Co: Spellbound. This premium currency allows users to purchase new land expansions, premium items from the store, and so on. Additional Gems can be purchased with real money.

The Smurfs & Co: Spellbound is now available to play for free on Facebook. The game has 3.2 million monthly active players, according to AppData, our tracking service for social and mobile apps and developers.
