Puzzle & Dragons developer GungHo Online unveils new mobile game Freak Tower
Following up the monumental success of its mobile phenomenon Puzzle & Dragons, developer GungHo Online Entertainment America has announced the launch of Freak Tower, a tower management game that combines tower building with tower defense.
Freak Tower greatly resembles NimbleBit’s Tiny Tower, as users are given a purse of coins and premium Jewels that are used to build new apartments and businesses. Apartments are inhabited by Freaks, each of which has an ideal job type and will offer bonuses to players that make sure they’re employed in that dream job.
Pulling the arm of the slot machine activates an automated elevator, delivering guests to their desired floors, and bonus Freaks can appear to instantly complete the construction of a room, or greatly speed up a current timer, as examples.
Where Freak Tower differs from Tiny Tower is in the inclusion of monsters, which will be available for interaction after players reach floor seven of their tower. Monsters will randomly attack the tower, triggering a tower defense mini-game. All of the Freaks in the tower will automatically attack the monster as it climbs from the lobby towards the roof, and players can activate various tools to slow down its climb.
Random incidents will also occur between Freak residents, giving players more to keep an eye on. For interrupting these problems before they become worse, players are given cash rewards that will push their progress forward more quickly.
Freak Tower is quite a departure from GungHo’s Puzzle & Dragons, a match-three battle game. The developer’s success with that game has seen it partner with other major developers for cross-promotions, and has helped push the company’s market cap to over $9 billion, as of last April.
Freak Tower is now available to download for free on iOS and Android. The game is monetized via a premium currency system, allowing players to speed up the building time of new floors or instantly restock goods in their shops.
