Battleforge developer EA Phenomic has been closed by Electronic Arts. The German studio employed 60 people, most recently creating free-to-play browser games like Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances. The move comes as part of EA’s focus on giving priority to “growth areas,” according to a company statement.

Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances (our review) is EA’s web-based strategy game, loosely based on the PC game franchise Command & Conquer. The social game allows players to defeat both computer controlled enemies and those controlled by other real players on a persistent map. Players can also join alliances with others to make progress faster. GI.biz reported last July that the game had crossed one million registered players.

While EA Phenomic is now gone, EA hasn’t announced plans to also shut down Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances. Presumably, the game will be handed over to another studio for further development. Its last major update saw a new world added to the massively-multiplayer online game earlier this week (July 10).

Read EA’s full statement to GI.biz below:

“As part of EA’s realignment in recent weeks, we have announced internally a small adjustment to some development staff to better focus our teams against priority growth areas. The decision to let people go is not something we take lightly and we are working to ensure that impacted employees are treated fairly and with respect for their contributions to EA, and with assistance to find other job opportunities. These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.”
