Japanese mobile gaming giant GREE has shuttered its UK offices in an effort to consolidate the company’s Western operations to the offices that remain in the US.

In an email statement obtained by TechCrunch, GREE’s UK business development director Lynn Daniel confirmed the closure of the UK office.

“Due to the challenging economic climate and on-going changes within the interactive industry, GREE has proposed to close its UK office,” the statement reads. “This decision is being considered in order to focus on developing content from the United States of America for the Western market.”

GREE has an extensive catalog of games available on iOS and Android, including Knights & Dragons, Crime City, War of Nations and Modern War.

Despite its past success, this isn’t the first time GREE has been met with layoffs and closures. The company released 25 employees in December 2012 from the company’s OpenFeint team, while another 30 employees were let go from its San Francisco office in May.

GREE’s Q3 earnings saw both sales and profits decline quarter-over-quarter to $370.9 million in revenue and $105.7 million in profits. During its latest earnings call, the developer revealed plans to release 15-20 new titles in Japan and five overseas before the end of 2013.

GREE’s competitor DeNA has faired much better recently, reporting Q1 earnings of $535.9 million in revenue and $173 million in profits.
