Zynga Slingo and The Sims Social this week’s gainer and loser among the Top 25 Facebook games of September 2012
We weren’t able to examine gainers and losers among September’s Top 25 Facebook games last week, due to an error with Facebook’s traffic reporting. Now that things are back on track, which means we’re able to pick up where we should be and start examining the traffic patterns of the games on the list, based on their daily active users (which is the best way to measure a game’s core audience).
We’re still on the bottom half of the list, which tends to see the most movement of games between months because many of the games are close in terms of traffic numbers. Sometimes, relatively small changes in users can cause a game to move by a couple of spots.
This week, we’re looking at No. 18 through No. 12.
Playtika’s Slotomania is holding steady at 2.1 million DAU. The game seems to be recovering from the dip it hit in June, going from 1.9 million DAU to 2.1 million. The game peaked in early June with 2.2 million and then began to drop off, hovering between 1.9 million DAU and 2 million for most of July and August. The game’s been enjoying steadily-increasing traffic ever since it launched in December 2010, and it looks like user numbers are starting to pick up again after a temporary stumble. If the numbers improve even a little, then Slotomania will likely move up by a couple of spots in time for next month’s Top 25 list.
T17. Zynga Slingo
Zynga Zlingo had a huge shot in the arm earlier this month when it jumped from 2.1 million DAU to 4.3 million (matching the high point the game hit in May), likely due to cross-promotion under Zynga’s banner. Since then, the game’s traffic has been starting to slowly drop off again, falling to 3.3 million DAU. Still, that means the game’s up by over 1 million DAU for the month and probably won’t fall back to its previous levels until at least next month. As a result, Zynga Slingo will likely appear several spots higher on September’s list.
16. Tetris Battle
Tetris Online’s Tetris Battle has had a bit of a roller coaster ride this month. The game started out at 2.2 million DAU, dropped to 2 million, jumped up to 2.3 million and then fell back to 2 million. Tetris Online launched in July 2010, and it saw regular, steady growth up until this April when it peaked with 4.2 million DAU, but traffic’s been falling since then. Based on the declining traffic, it seems likely Tetris Battle will probably be further down the list next month, possibly somewhere around No. 20.
15. The Sims Social
EA’s The Sims Social continues to drop, having gone from 2.4 million DAU to 2.1 million. Over recent months, the game’s seen a traffic resurgence in recent months thanks to a series of time-sensitive events requiring players to recruit their friends to help them meet milestones. In July, the game managed to surge up to 3.3 million DAU, but the numbers have been falling since then, though this month marks a pretty dramatic fall-off. If the traffic loss continues at this pace, it’s possible The Sims Social might be down to 1.8 million DAU, which would place it close to the bottom of our Top 25 Facebook games list for October.
14. Bejeweled Blitz
Popcap’s Bejeweled Blitz is another title that’s been all over the place since the month began. It’s gone from 2.5 million DAU to 2.3 million, up to 2.6 million, and is now sitting at 2.4 million. Bejeweled Blitz’s traffic history shows an erratic pattern, filled with several peaks and valleys. The game currently is at its lowest traffic point since October 2011; shortly after falling to this point, the game had a dramatic shift that saw it grow back up to 3.4 million DAU in MAY before it began to drop off again.
13. Dragon City
Social Point’s Dragon City has largely stayed leveled at 2.6 million DAU, though it did see a temporary swell that let it return to its peak of 2.8 million. Since it launched in May, the game’s seen strong growth, but Dragon City’s been holding steady at the 2.6 million mark since late August. If the game starts to improve again, then it’s likely the game will move up by a spot or two in time for October’s Top 25 list, but it seems just as likely that Dragon City’s traffic won’t change noticeably enough to make a difference.
