Texas Holdem Poker and Bubble Safari are this week’s gainer and loser among July’s top Facebook games

It’s the end of the month and that means we are now covering the highest levels of the Top 25 Facebook games of July. Movement in this part of the list is often slow, as the games mentioned often have such large numbers of Daily Active Users that it takes a truly significant traffic change to cause an adjustment in their standing. Here’s what we’ve looked at so far:

  • July 12, 2012: No. 25 (Pyramid Solitaire Saga) through No. 20 (SongPop)
  • July 19, 2012: No. 19 (Angry Birds Friends) through No. 13 (The Sims Social)
  • July 26, 2012: No 12 (Bejeweled Blitz) through No. 7 (CastleVille)

This week, we’ll look at No. 6 through No. 1.

6. FarmVille

Zynga’s FarmVille is continuing to fall, down from 3.9 million DAU at the beginning of the month to 3.3 million. That’s more than last month, which saw the game only dropping by 200,000 DAU, and FramVille’s dwindling traffic once again highlights how much of a difference two years can make: in March 2010, the game had 30 million DAU to its name. Zynga’s recent revelation that it’s working on FarmVille 2, a 3D sequel, doesn’t seem to be bolstering user interest any more. FarmVille isn’t likely to fall off our list any time soon, but between the ever-shrinking user base and other titles noticeably-increasing traffic the game could wind up close to falling out of the top ten games on August’s list.

5. CityVille

CityVille also shows significant losses, going from 4 million DAU to 3.2 million. That’s a slightly smaller drop than last month (which saw the game lose 1 million users), but not by much. CityVille launched in December 2010 and peaked in March 2011 with 21.5 million DAU, but it’s been gradually losing steam since then. The traffic loss has been accelerating lately: In January, CityVille still had 9.8 million DAU. Part of these shrinking numbers is likely due to EA launching SimCity Social late last month and snapping up city-builder fans looking for something new to play. Unless there’s a last minute surge in traffic, CityVille will probably appear beneath FarmVille on tomorrow’s list.

4. Bubble Witch Saga

King.com’s Bubble Witch Saga shrank from 4.8 million DAU to 4.1 million this month. Bubble Witch Saga is the most popular of King.com’s “Saga” titles, all of which have appeared on our Top 25 Facebook games lists at one point or another over the past year. Although off from its April peak of 6.7 million DAU, the game may start to see some noticeable gains next month due to last week’s launch  of a synchronous cross-platform version on iOS. As it is, though, the game will likely stay in the top four or five games on August’s Top 25 list.

3. Words With Friends

Zynga’s Words With Friends is still falling, down from 6.4 million DAU to 5.9 million. The game’s been popular between mobile and web users, peaking in March with 8.9 million DAU, but the game’s population has been shrinking since then. In June, Words With Friends saw a jump in traffic and reached as high as 6.9 million DAU before returning to its starting point of 6.4 million. Although a traffic loss of 500,000 DAU is significant, Words With Friends will likely stay in the top five games next month.

2. Bubble Safari

Zynga’s Bubble Safari is already starting to lose traffic. The game launched in May and peaked in June with 7.4 million DAU. It began July with 6.7 million DAU and is now down to 5.7 million. May and June both saw Bubble Safari repeatedly popping up on our lists of fastest-growing Facebook games, both by DAU and MAU, but the gains stopped coming in the middle of the second month. Since then, traffic’s fallen off a bit and it’s now neck-and-neck with Words With Friends. At the moment, it looks like Bubble Safari could wind up in either the No. 3 or No. 4 spots, depending how it compares with Words With Friends tomorrow.

1. Texas HoldEm Poker

Zynga’s Texas HoldEm Poker is continuing to prove slow-but-steady can win the race, even on Facebook. The game launched in July 2007, and its traffic’s continued to gradually increase ever since. July saw the game hit a new peak of 7.6 million DAU, though it’s since fallen to 7.2 million (the previous peak level it achieved in May). Still, Texas HoldEm Poker doesn’t look like it’ll give up the top position on August’s Top 25 chart, even with newcomer The Ville showing some massive gains this month.
