RockYou Finds Social Gamers are Flush with Friends and Disposable Income – Social gamers are socially active, increasingly sophisticated, highly suggestible consumers according to a study commissioned by social gaming company RockYou. Some of the highlights of the study included:

  • Social gamers spend 13 hours per week on social networks and an average of 9.5 hours per week on social games
  • Social gamers have made 20 new friends through social gaming
  • 24% of players report they have clicked on an ad in a social game and made an online purchase
  • Social gamers make frequent purchases in real life, especially on entertainment

The study was conducted by market research firm Interpret on behalf of RockYou, and polled 2,000 social gamers (60% of whom were female) over the age of 18 who lived in the US and played at least one hour of social games a week.

Chinese Social Game Maker Papaya Finds Women Most Profitable – Beijing based PapayaMobile has found its most profitable gamers are women. According to Papaya, 4% of the players of its social mobile games are “whales” and 69% of those whales are women. Whales are defined as the most enthusiastic and dedicated players, willing to spend more than $100 on a game and responsible for 60% of the company’s revenue. PapayaMobile was last on Inside Social Games in February, when executive Si Shen contributed a guest post about the rise of location-based social games in Asia.

Setgo Teaming with Teepee to Expand Its Gaming Portal – Games discovery portal Teepee is expanding its offerings, partnering with startup developer Setgo to bring its new game Castaways to the platform. Both companies are based in the UK.

Facebook Credits Prove Profitable for Double Down – Double Down Interactive is reporting a massive surge in transactions since adopting Facebook credits as its in-game currency. According to a press release from the Seattle developer, revenues are up 50% in since their game Double Down Casino made the switch. Zynga Goes Sequential with Mafia Wars 2 Comic – Zynga is prepping its fans for Mafia Wars 2 with a digital comic that reveals the back story and main cast of the upcoming social game. While larger game studios such as Ubisoft and Capcom have been using comics to promote high profile launches for some time, the move is a first for Zynga. The comic was created in collaboration with UDON, a Canadian art collective specializing in promotional artwork for the entertainment industry.

Real Prizes Coming to Facebook Games – Two new companies are seeing if combining social games, real world prizes and Facebook could be the next big thing in social media advertising. On September 29th Titan Gaming launched a beta version of a new games network on Facebook called Games and Prizes, the same day that startup Dobango released a Facebook version of its game play2Win. While each service is slightly different, play2Win focuses on letting players earn coupons and gift cards with smaller, local retailers, while Games and Prizes focuses on driving user engagement through branded games, the end result is the same — both services give Facebook gamers the chance to earn discounts and real prizes, and both services reward players for referring friends.

Google+ Gets Big Fast – Google+ has seen a huge influx of new users and traffic since entering open beta last week. According to data from analytics firm Experian Hitwise, traffic to the site is up more than 1200%. The total number of users is also likely to have crossed 50,000,000 according to analyst Paul Allen, who estimates the site is gaining 2 million users a day. We covered Google+ this week as social gaming heavyweights Zynga and Kabam brought their popular CityVille and Global Warefare games to the new social network.

EA Moving Into Social Game Marketing With New EA Legend Platform – EA announced this week it has developed a new game marketing platform called EA Legend. The platform was designed to help developers market their mobile, social, online and console games, by giving them access to EA’s existing user base of 300 million people. EA Legend will be officially unveiled on October 4th. In the announcement, EA touted that it had increased its audience by 30% this year, a great deal of that upswing coming from EA new Facebook game The Sims Social, which now has over 60 million monthly active users.

Raptr Finds That Zynga Draws Core and Casual Gamers – Zynga is great at engaging and converting players, and the appeal of their games is increasing even with hard-core gamers, according to a new report. Gaming based social network Raptr surveyed its membership and found that fans of Zynga’s “Ville” series log as much time on the social games as fans of the top core gaming franchises. In addition a third of XBox 360 gamers have played a Zynga game, a 50% increase over last year. The study also found that Zynga players logged in, on average, 8 times a day, and that Zynga games are played for three times longer than the rest of the top 10 social games combined. The full report can be read here.

Kobojo Commits to Expansion in Latin America – Leading French social games publisher Kobojo is beginning an aggressive international expansion, opening an office in Madrid and bringing on European games industry veteran Nicola Cencherle to oversee operations in Iberia, Italy and Latin America. According to Cencherle, Kobojo’s goal is to localize its games for 10 new languages before the end of the year, expanding that number to 20 by 2012, with a particular focus on Latin American countries. Kobojo recently translated their flagship Facebook game PyramidVille into Portuguese.

[Launch] Tiny Speck Finally Releases Surreal Social Game Glitch – San Francisco/Vancouver based developer Tiny Speck released their long incubating social game Glitch this week. The brain child of Flickr founder Stewart Butterfield, Glitch is a surreal social game that tasks players with expanding and exploring and expanding the Glitch universe. The catch is that the persistent world comes with it’s own highly unique rule set — for example, eggs come from eggplants, and pigs hatch from eggs. Players can do almost anything they want, but the game is designed to be highly social and cooperative.

[Launch] Vostu’s New Social Soccer Game Golmania on Facebook, Orkut – Brazilian social gaming company Vostu unveiled its latest title this week, Golmania, a real-time, multiplayer soccer game that enables players from all over the world to join teams, play in real soccer stadiums and organize private tournaments. The game is available in Portuguese, English and Spanish and utilizes Vostu’s multiplayer engine, which allows players on separate social networks to play and chat with one another.

[Update] Big Bang Theory Facebook Game Sees Solid Growth – The sitcom The Big Bang Theory launched a Facebook tie in game last week called The Big Bang Theory: The Mystic Warlords of Ka’a. The digital card game, based on the character’s favorite game in the show, has seen decent growth since its launch, currently sporting just over 60,000 monthly active users. The game was developed for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment by Dire Wolf Digital.

Sin City Holdem Is Facebook’s Latest Poker Star

Sin City Holdem, from 5280 Funding LLC, is the latest Texas Holdem style poker game for Facebook. It launched in late August of this year and has drawn in more than half a million monthly active users — still a far cry from the 33 million plus of Zynga’s Texas HoldEm Poker, but impressive nonetheless.

According to our traffic tracking service AppData, Sin City Holdem currently has 535,174 monthly active users and 32,897 daily active users.

Sin City Holdem offers lobbies of games (roughly 5,000 active players at review time) broken down by minimum bet. Games start at $400k buy-ins and go up to $12 billion for a chance to get in on the action. Tournament-style play is also offered, requiring registration to compete. The graphics have a hand-drawn feel, which helps the title stand out from the many other poker titles on the platform.

Unlike Zynga’s title, Sin City Holdem’s tutorial to the game of poker is non-interactive, existing instead as a separate page on Facebook featuring screenshots to accompany rules and basic strategies. Achievements are in place, as is a screen where players can view their wins with specific hands and other statistics. A section called “My Items” and an in-game store have icons present, but are not yet implimented.

Social features at present include friend invites and gifting of chips to friends. The game also has a friends leaderboard and real-time online friends list.

Sin City Holdem is monetized through the use of Facebook Credits to purchase additional chips. It seems likely that chips will be used to purchase items from the game’s upcoming store, as well. 5280 Funding has not indicated when this feature or the My Items section will go live.

Jonathan Knight Leaves RockYou on a High Note, Heading to Zynga

Jonathan Knight, former SVP of Games at RockYou, has left the social game developer and publisher for a position at Zynga, RockYou CEO Lisa Marino tells us.

Knight joined RockYou after a nine-year stint at EA as an executive producer and vice president with credits on The Sims series, The Simpsons Game, and Dante’s Inferno. Marino told us back in April that he was brought in specifically to rebuild RockYou’s games business after the company struggled to transition from its origins as a photo-sharing app developer and advertising network to serious social game developer. To that purpose, Knight oversaw development on the Zoo World franchise and the launch of its sequel, and the acquisitions of developers 3 Blokes, Playdemic, and 3D social game engine developer TirNua.

Though RockYou‘s overall traffic declined by more than 50% across monthly and daily active users during Knight’s 11 months at the company, changes to its ad platform and key content updates to specific titles yielded rapid growth for Zoo World 2 and Playdemic’s Gourmet Ranch. The latest game launch is 3 Blokes’ Galactic Allies, which went live last week. Its next game is likely going to be Cloudforest Expedition from partner studio Loot Drop, which is expected to launch sometime this fall.

“We hired [Knight] to help us build out a portfolio of great products and he’s done the job,” Marino says. She tells us that Knight’s duties as SVP have been transferred to internal team members for the time being with no mention of seeking a replacement right away. “We have built a strong team of talent through a careful hiring process, our Studio Partners program, and acquisitions over the past year. The departure of Jonathan will not impact our game development pipeline or our plans to continue to launch quality titles.”

Knight declined to comment on his employment status at Zynga. It is not listed on his LinkedIn profile as of press time.

Dirty Dancing Tops This Week’s List of Emerging Facebook Games

Dirty Dancing tops this week’s life of emerging Facebook games as Bubble Atlantis exits by breaking the 1 million monthly active user mark. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader looks to be the next game to graduate from this ranking at No.2 while Italian sports sim fantacalcioville rounds out the top three.

Farther down the list, we see two Bible-themed games picking up speed. Journey of Moses had a bit of a head start on Noah’s Ark, but both games build on established social game genres like treasure hunting and farming while making light use of religious themes. Time will tell if these games successfully tap the under-served evangelical audience in the social games market.

Clicks of the Facebook Games Ticker Now Reveal Popovers That Could Hurt Growth

Facebook’s status popover box has been added to the games live ticker app for what could be additional virality — or additional clicks between player and game.

The popover feature was part of the news feed’s Ticker added to Facebook during the f8 conference. When mousing over the stories in the Ticker, a popup window appears next to the story — from which the user can view the story in greater detail, and Like or comment on the activity. The idea here is to show users abbreviated stories about a large volume of content, and allow them to mouse over to view the full story and leave feedback without losing their place on the site.

Until today, we hadn’t seen the popover feature added to the Games Ticker, which was introduced back in August with updates to Canvas Page and new APIs. The idea behind the Games Ticker is to encourage social discovery of new games and reduce the friction of joining a new game. Before the popover, players would see stories in the Games Ticker on a game’s Canvas Page and if they clicked, they’d immediately be taken directly to that game.

With the popover in place, a new layer of viral sharing occurs around social games where players can comment on each other’s games stories without leaving their active game. This is because Likes and comments can get a game activity story promoted to appear on the home page’s news feed.

However, the popovers may lead to fewer installs for social games in the long run because players get a second chance to reconsider before being brought to a new game. Additionally, players may feel as though they “participated” in the story by the act of commenting or Liking without ever having to click the story that would take them to the game. To that point, those who do click through will probably be more likely to become engaged players.

Zynga Launches Enrique Iglesias Campaign in CityVille

Zynga is launching a CityVille campaign next week that integrates singer Enrique Iglesias into the game to promote his Euphoria Tour.

Starting October 4th, players over level 6 can interact with an Enrique Iglesias avatar within their city. Themed reward and collection items like clothing and a Miami high-rise are also part of the campaign, along with quests that net the player Enrique Iglesias posters. The main feature of the integration is a Euphoria Arena structure that players can complete to unlock an in-game preview of Iglesias’s latest music video, “I Like How it Feels.”

At face value, the Enrique Iglesias-CityVille integration seems to be on a smaller scale than Zynga’s springtime GagaVille campaign for Lady Gaga. For example, players aren’t getting early access to multiple songs and there’s no secondary integration with other Zynga titles like Words With Friends on mobile. Additionally, there’s no contest elements for players to win merchandise or concert tickets.

On the other hand, CityVille has the larger audience, which translates to more reach for the campaign. The campaign is also more demanding of players, which could lead to higher player engagement. It’ll be interesting to see if it also leads to an influx of players similar to what GagaVille drove to FarmVille. In that instance, however, the real spike in traffic came when unreleased Gaga tracks were made available in-game.

According to our AppData traffic tracking service, CityVille currently enjoys 71.3 million monthly active users and 13.1 million daily active users. The game launched in December of last year, quickly becoming the largest social game on Facebook. Traffic for the game has been in steady decline since March.

Jungle Jewels Flash Matches Classic Puzzle Gameplay with Power-Ups on Facebook

Jungle Jewels Flash is the follow-up to GameDuell’s popular puzzle title Jungle Jewels. The game launched in late August and recently made our list of fastest-growing games by monthly active users.

According to our traffic tracking service AppData, Jungle Jewels Flash currently has 683,846 monthly active users and 45,414 daily active users.

Like the original, Jungle Jewels Flash is a match-three puzzle title; players must match three or more same-colored gems in a row in order to clear them from the board. The aesthetic is similar, as are some of the other core gameplay mechanics, like matching four or more gems to create a special gem that triggers an explosion when matched. Matching gems quickly in this game triggers a “Fire Mode.” During this period, all matched gems explode, destroying nearby gems. Continuing to match gems quickly while it’s active extends the time it’s active. The player’s score translates into coins that are awarded at the and of each game.

Some elements from the original Jungle Jewels, however, have been cut. For example, Jungle Jewels Flash doesn’t allow players to purchase more time on the game clock (which is 60 seconds in both titles). Instead, players can purchase power-ups using coins before starting a game and activate them at any time. These include a swirling gem that sucks in all gems of a specific color when matched, a cross bomb that takes out all blocks in four directions, an item that doubles the player’s score, and one that adds an additional 10 seconds to the timer. Up to three power-ups (the game calls them “boosts”) can be queued for each game, although one can only be obtained by having friends playing and another can only be obtained by watching an advertisement (up to five times a day).

The game’s social features include inviting friends, sharing high scores on Walls, and a scoreboard for comparing players’ scores to their friends’. As mentioned, players also earn boosts by having friends that are playing the game. They also receive bonus coins at the end of each game based on the number of friends they have playing. The game features a weekly tournament, as well, that rewards the best player among a group of friends with bonus coins.

Jungle Jewels Flash is monetized by players purchasing additional coins, to be spent on power-ups, using Facebook Credits. They can be purchased in groups of 120, 500, 2000 and 4000 for 9, 30, 99 and 199 Facebook Credits, respectively.

You can follow Jungle Jewels Flash’s progress using AppData, our traffic tracking service for social games and developers.

CityVille, Bubble Witch Saga Top This Week’s List of Fastest-Growing Games by DAU

CityVille leads our list of fastest-growing games by daily active users this week even as its overall traffic for the month falls. Two new games, Bubble Witch Saga and Adventure World, round out the top three.

The Sims Social falls off the rankings in DAU this week after a sharp decline that started September 25th. It’s the first such shift in traffic the game has experienced since its mid-August launch. Monthly active users still appear to be on the rise, however, suggesting that the DAU drop may be due to long-time players hitting a wall in the late gameplay experience.
