>> The goal, for Pincus, is building a game that, unlike a traditional console game or an MMO like World of Warcraft, the players never leave. “I don’t know if we’ll get there,” he said, “or if that’s a single game or a network of games. We’re all going to have to figure that out.” <<

Players never leave World of Warcraft :)

I suspect that it is inherently unachievable to have players stay inside a game forever, but great gameplay plays a huge part in that. This is the lesson for social game developers that they have to learn from the "traditional" (I think this phrasing is somewhat mis-applied, but moving on) game developers.

A lot of what drives social games is basically the same thing that drives web behaviours, but it is common for users to tire of web behaviours without significant and constant updates (such as the Facebook annual make-over). A lot of social game developers have discovered this treadmill, I think, and also discovered that per-user it's actually quite low value.

On the other hand, great gameplay can keep users going for years, but is much harder to do well and, when done well, of much higher long term value. I think anyone who really wants to capture users' attention long term will eventually have to take this thinking on board.
