Hi5 Gets Gaming Veteran as President and CTO

alex-st-johnIn Hi5‘s latest move to turn its social network into more of a gaming site, the company is hiring game veteran Alex St. John to be its new president and chief technology officer. St. John is credited with helping to lead Microsoft’s efforts in computer and eventually XBox gaming, and he more recently founded online gaming company WildTangent.

So why is he joining Hi5, a company that is a year into a fundamental product shift from networking to gaming? VentureBeat caught up with him and broached the topic:

St. John acknowledged in an interview that hi5 needs to prove it can be more competitive in the social gaming market against the likes of Facebook and its game publishers like Zynga. But he said that the social gaming market isn’t locked up; rather, he said, it is just beginning…. [I]n today’s market it will be easier to use the large audience and platform of hi5 to grow a social games and entertainment business.

Hi5, as readers know, has been busy rolling out a virtual currency, a games portal, chat, and avatars for users. A company press release about St. John’s new position hints at what he’s going to be working on: “St. John led several key revenue innovations at WildTangent, including a highly successful virtual currency, WildCoins, used for microcurrency transactions, and an advertising partnership with WPP to sell sponsored microcurrency to Fortune 500 brands.”

We don’t know how Hi5′s gaming efforts are currently going, but St. John seems like a promising hire for the company.

Ngmoco’s Free-to-Play iPhone Game Hits the Top Grossing Apps List

Eliminate ProWay back in March, Pinch Media CEO, Greg Yardley, broke down the potential monetization methods for iPhone games. The question, at that point, was: Do you sell the app or make it free with advertisements? The general consensus, then, was that it was wiser to sell the app cheaply, as most users did not continue to play after a few days of ownership, thus making reliance on advertisements moot.

October turned this whole concept on its head, however, when Apple changed its policy to allow the sale of virtual goods within free applications. Previously, this was limited only to paid apps. And now, we’re seeing free-to-play games showing up in Apple’s “Top Grossing” charts.

Capitalizing on the new virtual goods features, iPhone developer ngmoco launched the social, multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS), Eliminate Pro. Via the company’s social platform, Plus+, this good-looking app not only has strong game play and social outlets, but is free and sells virtual items called “energy packs” in order to make its revenue.

Taking a page from Facebook games, energy is a consumable resource needed to do things such as upgrade equipment or level up. The energy would slowly replenish over long periods of time, but in order to allow players to avoid waiting, said packs could be purchased for immediate use. Suffice to say, this model, combined with addictive social play, has this FPS sitting at #36 (as of 11/29/09) on the charts.

Previously, the game was ranked and #28 with another free-to-play title, Papaya Pro 3.0 which was at #21. While the latter is no longer within the Top 100 grossing apps, it goes to show the potential of this business model for the iPhone. Based on these titles’ success, it is likely to see a lot more developers make use of this new (for the iPhone) freemium model.

Tap Tap Revenge 3 Adds Facebook Connect

Tap-Tap-Revenge-3Between Tapulous’ Tap Tap Revenge 3 music-performing game and the newer Rock Band from Electronic Arts, the latter has recently felt like the stronger of the pair. However, Tapulous has long been the most popular iPhone application, and its fan base (and $0.99 price tag) has carried it well the past two months.

But the latest Tap Tap title felt lacking in social areas when compared to its current competition. Likely, this is what attributes to the fact that Rock Band is currently #15 on Apple’s new Top Grossing Apps List, while Revenge is at #29 (that and the EA game did see a price drop from $9.99 to $6.99).

Not one to be outdone, Tapulous has recently updated the title with Facebook Connect capability. With the latest 3.0.1 version, users will not only be able to make use of the Facebook platform to connect with others, but will also see other features such as optimized downloads, listed high scores, and other miscellaneous performance improvements.

Perhaps the best way to describe the latest update is “about time.” Since its release in early October, the general lack of Facebook Connect has been one of a handful of complaints (that and fairly limited number of tracks that come with the initial purchase). Rock Band, on the other hand, released with Facebook Connect and came with better known artists, as well as more methods for social and group play.

With more players on iTunes recommending the free Tap Tap Revenge 2 over the third installment (with some claiming that the latter was actually a “downgrade”), and the overall better social features of Rock Band, this was an update long overdue.

New Records For FishVille and Café World on This Week’s Top Facebook Applications List

We’re seeing a few distinguishing trends continue this week on our list of the top 20 applications with the most new monthly active users on Facebook. Zynga‘s FishVille continues to surge, crossing 20 million monthly active users yesterday, riding weekly growth of 4.68 million, according to AppData.

The virtual aquarium game is now the eighth-largest app on Facebook. It is catching up with CrowdStar‘s Happy Aquarium, the formative game in the genre and still the largest with 27.3 million monthly actives.

Meanwhile, CrowdStar’s latest game, Happy Pets, has been coming up as well. It grew by 2.19 million monthly actives this past week to reach 5.13 million, making it the second-fastest growing app. Zynga’s massive FarmVille, however, was in third, with 1.77 million new users for a total of 68.6 million monthly actives.

Zynga’s Café World is on the list yet again, growing by 1.08 million to break the 30 million monthly active user mark. RockYou‘s new one, virtual zoo-keeping game Zoo World, is also seeing ongoing growth, having grown by 1.02 million to reach 3.18 million in the past week.

Looking on down the list, you can also see a few other striking ones. IGG Inc.‘s Fish Isle has quickly hit the big league’s, after only launching a few weeks ago. The high-quality fish-farming game is only a month old, and an early foray by a massive multiplayer online gaming developer into social gaming. This app, and it’s developer, are off to a very solid start.

LOLapps is also back on the list again, with Champions Online and Band of Heroes both seeing significant growth.

And the new hospital genre of sim game is on, as well. We noted Medical Mayhem last week — it has you run a virtual hospital (fun, huh?) — and it has grown by 572,000 in the past week to reach 701,000. We’re assuming there will be a HospitalVille out within the next few weeks.

Social Gaming Roundup: Mainstream Virtual Goods, Star Fever Agency, FSU, and More

Xbox Live ChocoboXbox Live Gets More Virtual Goods – Activision‘s Transformers 2 game has some new virtual goods on Xbox Live. For 240 Microsoft Points, users can purchase the Transformer heads of Megatron, Optimus Prime, or Bumblebee, and for 80 they can sport one of three Transformer t-shirts.

Also available for Xbox Live avatars is a little reward from SquareEnix to those that participated in the “Register – Tweet – Win” Final Fantasy XIII event. It’s a free, baby chocobo!  Of course, if you didn’t participate, you can go to the FFXIII splash page and register to receive a code for one later this year.

Sometrics Improves ijji.com Revenue – Hardcore games portal ijji.com has worked with offer solutions company Sometrics to increase its offer-based revenue. As with many game portals in recent time, ijji allows users to earn virtual currency (G Coins) via offers. Now, with Sometrics, such offers are simplified by sending users directly to targeted offers as soon as they click “Get Free G Coin.” Currently, the new offer solutions have earned a 15% increase in offer completion and a 30% increase in revenue.

Star Fever AgencyStar Fever Agency Launches – Social MMO, Star Fever Agency, has launched and developer, Sarbakan, will be giving away “15 million [worth of] Star Fever Agency Dollars, Privilege Points, Limited Edition and Unique items.” The event will last three weeks and be open to the 15,000 players who pre-registered for the game. Furthermore, players can invite up to two friends to also take part in the special.

Florida State University Studies Virtual Goods – According to Virtual Goods News, a Florida State University, College of Business doctoral student did a virtual goods study with the help of First Planet Company, developers of Planet Calypso. According to the company, it was meant to take a look at virtual goods buying habits and took place last weekend. The company states that the study “will help to determine if a player’s experience with a product in a virtual world influences their intention to purchase a product and how that experience can affect a brand.”

Ameba PiggAmeba Pigg Coming to Facebook – A popular Japanese virtual world by the name of Ameba Pigg, developed by Cyberagent, is working its way to the United States according to Asiajin. The platform? Facebook. The company states that an English-language and Americanized rendition of the title will be available next spring. Such changes include more American-style avatar clothing, and new virtual areas such as Central Park.

Zhu Zhu PetsDigital Zhu Zhu Pets – A popular toy line called Zhu Zhu Pets is taking a first step into casual games and quasi-virtual worlds. Creator Cepia is turning to toy industry veterans Marc Rosenberg and Bill Goodman, as well as game maker TiltnTwist to make their first iPhone rendition of the popular toy. The game will allow users, based on statements posted by Playthings.com, ”roll around Zhu Zhu-Ville with [their] favorite Zhu Zhu Pets, Mr. Squiggles and his Adventure Ball.”

FarmVille.com Offers Exclusive Gifts – Looks like Zynga is pushing users to utilize FarmVille.com by offering seven different giftable items exclusively for users of the site. The gifts are an orange, purple, or white flag, a log bench, a ladder and bucket, a barrel of grapes, and a wooden log. Luckily, users that prefer Facebook will still be able to receive the gifts, just not send them.

FarmBookPlayata Launches Facebook Databases – German company Playata is looking to make things easier for the FarmVille playerbase with a new database called FarmBook.  The new Facebook application features tables of in-game items that can be sorted by criteria such as time, experience, profitability, and so on. The app will also offer users close-up shots of the items as well as animation and sound previews.

Two Tips and Two Tricks for FarmVille

FarmVilleZynga’s FarmVille has over 67.8 million monthly active users. So we decided to look into what works for all the country tycoons out there. Keep in mind, however, that this is an online game and everything is subject to change, but thus far, the following tips and tricks have proven most useful.

Tip #1 – Knowing What To Buy

Frankly, what you purchase is of crucial importance. Remember, that you do not have a lot of real estate on your farm, so it is wise to think conservatively in regards to what you place where. Granted, you do need decorations for certain Ribbons (achievements), but you can just as easily get them using smaller items such as rest tents or bales of hay. That said, however, these don’t make much money, so it may be wiser to use the space for items that can bring you income.

Discovered on myfivebest.com, here is a very useful break down of what trees and animals to buy. Now, trees don’t make you much money, but they provide steady income (as you only buy once and they produce indefinitely). Ideally, you want to only keep what produces over one coin an hour (though 0.5 coins per hour is okay). The Top 5 trees and animals are listed below:

Top Five Earning Trees Per Hour:
- Acai: 2.29 coins/hour
- Olive: 1.67 coins/hour
- Date: 0.95 coins/hour
- Pomegranate: 0.90 coins/hour
- Banana: 0.78 coins/hour

Top Five Earning Animals Per Hour:
- Horse: 1.17 coins/hour
- Goat: 1.13 coins/hour
- Duck: 0.94 coins/hour
- Sheep (Black): 0.78 coins/hour
- Pig: 0.63 coins/hour

Overall, these are the items to stick with, though the animals should only be kept to the horse and goat. The only exception to either of these lists is the Cherry Tree and Chicken. The former helps a great deal getting the Ribbon(s) “Knock on Wood” and the latter is extremely small, produces fast, and helps to get the “Zoologist” Ribbon(s).

CropsTip #2 – Top Crops
Now, the aforementioned items were generally passive. However, crops are the backbone of earning and experience gain in FarmVille. We looked around some more and found a website called The Modern Hippy Male. Disregarding the curious name, we did find a useful and recent break down of the best crops to buy for income and for experience. Here are the Top 5 for each:

Top 5 Income Earning Crops:
- Peas (23hr Harvest): Cost – 190 Coins ~ Sale – 381 Coins
- Asparagus (16hr Harvest): Cost – 220 Coins ~ Sale – 357 Coins
- Onion (12hr Harvest): Cost – 170 Coins ~ Sale – 275 Coins
- Grapes (24hr Harvest): Cost – 85 Coins ~ Sale – 270 Coins
- Sugar Cane (8hr Harvest): Cost – 165 Coins ~ Sale – 239 Coins

Top 5 Experience Gaining Crops:
- Black Berries, Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries
- Aloe Vera, Ghost Chili
- Pumpkin, Tomatoes, Sugar Cane
- Cranberries, Green Tea, Acorn Squash
- Asparagus

Lots of PlotsTrick #1 – Quick Leveling

Okay, so here’s another trick to help you. Be forewarned, it is expensive, but it will get you leveled quicker if you have the money. This one was found on Gameolosophy.com and did prove rather useful while funds lasted. Start by plowing 10 plots of land and planting them all with soybeans. Then… just delete them all and repeat. It costs 300 coins but earns three experience per plot. Expensive, yes, but very quick in the leveling department. Of course, you don’t have to use 10 plots either, any number will work; ten is just a nice round number.

Super GiftsTrick #2 – Super Gifts

Here’s an interesting one that seems to still be working. Evidently, it is possible to send multiple gifts to the same person in the same day. Using the Firefox browser, go to the “Free Gifts” tab. Then right-click and open “Free Gifts” in a new tab (we tried it with 10 total tabs). Select a gift in each tab, select a person to send them too, then when you have the “Send” prompt on every page, quickly cycle through and send them. If done correctly, they will receive them all, and guess what, they can sell them for coin, and if they send gifts back, so can you. Please note, however, that this may not always work and you will sometimes get errors. It also tends to work better during non-primetime hours.

Again, all of this is subject to change, but if you have any useful tips or tricks, by all means, let us know.

A Wide Range of New Facebook Games Hit This Week’s Up-and-Comers List

A promising range of applications has shown up in this week’s up-and-comers list, including what may be a popular new genre of game — health care.

For those who haven’t been following recently, this list is derived by looking at the apps on AppData with between 100,000 and 1 million users, that grew by the most monthly active users in the last week. Inevitably, some apps seen here are simple quizzes or gift-giving types, that have short and uninteresting life-spans. However, this list also provides an early look at high-quality apps that go on to become major hits — like LOLapps‘ string of role-playing games released in recent weeks, including Champions Online Diva Life, Yakuza Lords, and more.

So today, at number one on the list, we have Ultimate Slot Machines, a game made by Hong Kong-based 6 Waves — or we would have it if the developer had designated it as a “game” within Facebook’s application directory, instead of putting it in the “lifestyle” category. Anyway, in it, you can choose from all sorts of slot machine games like what you’d see in a casino, except you can’t win real money. The game has gone from 0 to 484,000 within the last week, probably partially due to developer cross-promoting it across its dozens of other apps.

In second place — but first on this list — we have Medical Mayhem, made by a little-known developer called Vojo World. Interestingly, the game is being cross-promoted by 6 Waves within the toolbar it runs on various apps. And, similar to Ultimate Slot Machines, this app has grown nearly all of it 444,000 monthly active users within the past week. We’re also interested to see how the medical genre does on Facebook — especially, for American audiences, as Congress debates a major overhaul of the real-life health care system. This game makes you the boss of a hospital (we presume a private hospital, not a government-run one), and tasks you with organizing doctors and nurses to take care of patients as quickly and effectively as possible.

Medical Mayhem on Facebook

LOLapps has one RPG still on this list, that is close to graduation — Band of Heroes, with 191,000 new users and 881,000 total monthly actives. We expect it to have moved up into the big leagues of apps with more than 1 million users by this time next week.

Some other, previously-seen games on today’s list are spy RPG The Hierarchy, from Serious Business. It grew by 187,000 to reach 551,000 monthly actives. Other returns are Ponzi, Inc., a corporate business RPG, Top Fish from Slide, arcade-style game COLLAPSE! and Electronic Art’s Spore Islands.

Also notable are two French games, Piou Piou contre les cactus and GooBox – Giochi gratuiti, both of which have also made this list before.

Yes, Virtual Goods in Social Games Are Also Getting Black Friday Discounts

Black FridayBlack Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is a big day for retailers. And with the growth of social gaming this past year, the day might also be big for virtual goods retailers. Zynga, specifically, is offering discounts for items in a couple of its bigger games.

Roller Coaster Kingdom, a tycoon-style title with 15.5 million monthly active users, will be having its own virtual “Black Friday Sale,” as spotted by Jason Salas. As a game that involves the creation of a top notch amusement park, costs can run a bit high, and hiring your friends only saves so much. So, it looks like Zynga will be slashing ride prices by 25%. Yes, its a 25% off sale for all of them, and this includes rides that cost both in-game coins as well as those that cost real money.

Of course, if you’re not a fan of Roller Coaster Kingdom, Zynga will be holding other sales as well, for its long time hit title, Mafia Wars. From Friday to Monday (until 11:59pm PST), the company will be offering discounts on some of the most highly demanded “Limited Edition and consumable items.” Players will be able to track what they purchase on a special “mastery bar” and if they buy 20 or more items, they will receive an extra gift that has only been descirbed as “uber.”

Not enough? Mafia Wars will also present a special “Featured Item” hourly that will see discounts greater than any others for that time. Moreover, this promo is said to be tied to the Thanksgiving event, Mafia Wars Food Fight, in which all jobs and attacks have a chance to drop Thanksgiving items. All ready, we know that virtual goods make for an excellent source of revenue, but just how well will it do on this dark, dark day? Insanity or genius… guess we’ll see on the 27th.

Vikings of Thule Brings More Play to Facebook Role-Playing Games

Vikings of ThuleOver the summer we had the chance to take a brief look at the preview of a new Facebook massive multiplayer online game called Vikings of Thule. Developed by Gogogic, a full review of this Viking-based role-playing game has been a long time coming. With the very good first impression we had, we went into this Norse realm with high hopes.

When starting out, players are tasked with the creation of their avatar, selection of their region, and their home town. The first and last of these seem to mean little beyond aesthetic appeal, but the region actually grants users a bonus to some of the various, consumable resources required by the game (ore, resources, runes, etc). Once done, the main player objective is made abundantly clear: To become “one of the 39 who hold a vote at Althingi.” Essentially, become one of the Top 39 players, and evidentially, that is no easy task.

In order to progress players must perform more basic tasks such as buying and better equipping themselves, but must also manage their resources in order to upgrade there homes and land, loot windfalls, manage followers, and win duels. All of these earns what is called “Respect Points” (RP), which essentially equates to your level. The higher your respect, the higher your ranking, and each of the aforementioned features can add to it.

ManagementHomes are perhaps the simplest of the four: The bigger (higher level) home you own, the more RP you earn a day. Furthermore, your home also comes with land, which also comes with followers that can become classes – Peasants, Huskarls, and Jarls. Each day, you will earn followers (with the latter two unlocking at a level three and level five respectively) that can be allotted to any of the three types. Each will grant you RP, resources, or other benefits on a daily basis.

When you are not messing around with your assets, you are probably looting windfalls, which seem to be random resource items that can spawn on the map or be stolen from friends. Of course, while that is interesting, and a source of income when broke, most people will spend their time dueling.

Which is perhaps one of the most interesting features of Vikings of Thule. Duels can be fought randomly (which will pit you against someone of a similar level) or chosen manually from lists of players in different towns. Each duel will cost an “entry fee” with the winner claiming both buy-ins as well as RP. However, that is not what makes it interesting.

Buying Moves for DuelsDueling is almost like a collectible card game (CCG). Along with gear, the Marketplace also sells “Moves.” This could consist of a movement, an attack, a spell, a defense, and so on. Each duel is set up into rounds that take place on a tiled 5×5 space, and before each round only three “cards” (three moves) can be chosen. The three are then played out, in the order they were selected, affecting the tiles on the stage that are displayed on the card face.

Suffice to say, Vikings of Thule has a number of wonderful features. The only real downside is it feels that Gogogic stretched themselves a little too thinly. Each feature to the game is very interesting, but feels like they could be so much more. The home and land, for example is nice, but in the end you are only clicking a button to upgrade a house, and if followers come in daily, there doesn’t’ seem to be any real strategic choices to be made. Patience is all that is needed.

Furthermore, other than duels and getting windfalls stolen occasionally, there doesn’t seem to be any penalties for anything (and losing, honestly, isn’t that bad save for a little loss of coin… which can be earned back in time by your followers). Vikings were known for being brutal, and it’s ironic to have a Viking game where there are minimal penalties for poor play, bad decisions, and so on.

Officially still in open beta, Vikings of Thule looks great and has a tremendous amount of potential, even though it has only gained a few thousand users, according to AppData. The features truly are fun to play, but as odd as it might sound, without a little risk, its almost a moot point. What’s the point of a reward, if there was no exhilaration in attaining it?

More Fresh Fish Among This Week’s Facebook Games With The Most Daily Active Users

Below is our weekly leaderboard of Facebook games with the most daily active users. This is a metric we’re looking at more closely, because it gives a better view than monthly active users of how engaging — and potentially lucrative — an application is. The more often users come back to play a game, the more likely they are to decide to buy or earn some virtual currency.

For games that have already proved successful, the next useful step is to divide DAU by MAU, which gives a stat we’re calling stickiness — how many new users a game tends to retain. Check out this post for a full explanation of stickiness.

Big Fish

For a second week in a row, Zynga’s Fishville is king of the DAU chart. The top five now includes two other fishy apps, Fish Isle, by IGG, and Happy Aquarium, by CrowdStar, while Fish Life comes in at #17.

But if DAU is any indication, Fishville and Happy Aquarium have become the Poseidon and Triton of Facebook (father and son amphibious gods, for those not up on their Greek mythology). Fish Isle is still small fry, while the DAU growth of almost every other fish app has slowed considerably.

Last week, we asked how big Fishville can get — at the time it was shooting past nine million users, and is now almost double that. Could it catch up with Happy Aquarium? It still may.

But while Fishville’s MAU has continued to skyrocket, its DAU growth isn’t as rambunctious as it was, and the app’s stickiness has fallen to 36%. Its growth may pick back up after Thanksgiving, but if it doesn’t, Happy Aquarium will probably maintain its lead. Here are the rankings:

Among the lower rankings, you might notice some apps that are slowly gaining a loyal userbase. They’re conveniently ranked #9-12: Island Paradise, Crazy Planets and Castle Age. While Crazy Planets is a bit below the success threshold with only 13% stickiness, the other two are in the 20-30% range that indicates they may be long-term winners.

The rest of the rankings are a mixed bag of game types, and most are new this week. Given the holiday, we’ll probably have to wait until next week to see whether any of them really have traction.
