We used Flash from the outset for this very reason. I considered it a competitive advantage over Sharendipity, shame to see they're moving to Flash... ;-) I'm sometimes envious of the improved performance of Java (in some scenarios), but ultimately I'm satisfied working within that constraint considering the huge amount of upside of the Flash platform.
